Just returned from Hickem and we found out they have the Gary Sinese concert Sat night at 7. It is free and outdoors on the lawn. We stoped at the club and they have diners from 5:30 to 8PM. So thought we would go to diner then to the concert. |

JayDee, Sandi and I would have loved to ride with you. We did that a few years ago and it was a blast. I'm more of a Goldwing person, but not adverse to a Harley now and then. Have fun. Wish we could be there.

Bill; Don't give up on the "taking no Pax" flight. Things change. We got a C-40 from Whidbey Island to North Island on Sat and hope to get from here to Hickam on another C-40 Tuesday. We try to avoid Travis. Hope to see you in Hawaii. Jaydee; Sounds like fun but I have never been on one of those things so it's four wheels for me. David |

Jaydee: Do they rent 3wheelers? Just kiddin', Mick and I are stuck at McChord trying to get to Travis and they just cancelled tomorrows flt . Tues doesn't look good either one is a medivac and the other is a tanker, taking no pax. We're still trying. |

Jim, I would love to take you up on this offer. Only a few problems, I'm in Texas, don't ride that type of bike and don't think Jim would let me do it anyway. Have fun |

Jim and I have been in Hawaii for 2 weeks, so will miss the BFB. We are hoping for a luxurious ride on a C130 tomorrow morning back to NI. We do have 2 ideas for you folks coming in, however. The Dixie Grill and Crab Shack just a few minuntes west of Pearl on Kamehameha Hwy is terrific. Happy hour 3-6. Meatloaf sandwich is Jim's vote. Gumbo is mine. Also, for sounds of the islands, KINE FM 105.1 will make you take up hula. Have fun. |

The Lt. Dan Band will be performing on HIK on 31 January. In case you're not familiar with them, it's a band which features actor Gary Sinese of "CSI NY" and Forrest Gumpp fame. He's a big supporter of our military and does as many concerts as he can on bases all over the world. |

Quarters/Cars/Sights/Tiki Bar/Google Placemarks This message is kind of a catchall - your indulgence is requested. If you’re stumped for quarters for the BFB consider the Pepper Tree Apartments. They usually rent by the month and most of their clientele are military families just arrived on the island. The manager is an acquaintance and has agreed to rent to BFB attendees for short periods if vacancies exist. These are full apartments. 1BR units are $69 + Tax and 2 BRs are 85 + Tax. They are located about 1.5 miles west of the Arizona Memorial so you probably wouldn’t want to be there without a car. While the very immediate neighborhood isn’t particularly attractive it is quite safe and the apartments are only two blocks from the Pearlridge shopping center and its surrounding stores and restaurants. Parking is free and ample. Contact Charro at 808-488-1993 (the office is not manned before noon or on weekends) or by e-mail at pepper3tla@aol.com. A good deal on car rentals on Oahu can be had from JN Rentals, part of a large automobile dealership. They rent all new Chevrolets and Mazdas and will provide pick-up from the airport but they can’t get on Hickam. Their rate for a mid-size car today is $29.95 and they extend a 10% discount to military including retirees. They also have vans if some folks want to gang up. 808-831-2724, sclines@jnautomotive.com. I spoke with Susan just a few minutes ago. One of the places you should see is the Byodo-In Temple not far from the Marine Corps base at Kaneohe. It’s a replica of a famous temple in Japan and is quite beautiful. A very colorful Chinese temple within Honolulu nestled against Foster Botanical Gardens is Kwan Yin (Goddess of Mercy) Buddhist Temple, and don’t be shy about walking in and looking around here. A third and exceptionally serene temple, again Japanese, is the Myohoji Temple off Nuuanu Avenue in the city. These latter two are not regularly visited by tourists. The last real tiki bar in Honolulu is the La Mariana Marina. It’s between the airport and town just off Sand Island Access Road. The food while OK isn’t anything to write home about but the atmosphere is great. The place is right on the water. For a bunch of mainly old “flatulence emissions,” this place should be a hoot. We sometimes get a gang from our local scuba club together to go there. See http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g60982-d434379-Reviews-La_Mariana_R estaurant_Bar-Honolulu_Oahu_Hawaii.html. If anybody is interested and has Google Earth on their computer, e-mail me and I’ll send you a Google Earth placemark file showing some places of interest on Oahu (and some not very interesting ones, too). Finally, I’ll be glad to sell you a 41’ sail boat to go home in. |

Do we want to setup a diner for Sat night at the NCO club or some recommended resturant. If so I can try to coordinate. |

For all of you who like to hike check out this website: http://www.hawaiiweb.com/html/hiking/maunawili_trail.html My husband and I have done it two or three times and plan on taking my parents in May. Nice cold waterfalls waiting for you at the top of the mountain! |

I know it must have been posted before but what are the exact dates for Barefoot Bar 2009? Also for the hikers in the group I have found some hikes in the hills around Honolulu. The one I am thinking of takes about two+ hours and is somewhat strenuous. Assuming I can get there I would be happy to lead a hike if others are interested. I will probably have a rental car so I can help with transportation to the trail head. |

Most of you already know this stuff. But last year when we were at the Pear Harbor NEX, we stopped in the ITT office. That week's special was the Atlantis submarine for $17.00 adult, never would have done it, but staying at the Hale Koa, tour departs at the Hilton, it was well worth the 2 hours. |

PCC - You know the Hale Koa tour desk has a package for PCC, one will get you there about 2pm for the evening program. Forgot the $$. |

"We advise people to go to the Polynesian Cultural Center but NOT to buy the biggest package, that includes the dinner and evening show." That sounds good, too. I've been to HI several times but never made it out to the PCC because I rely on the Bus. I was always leery of getting stuck out there after the Bus stops running. If I can get a good tour of the place before dark, and not stay for the dinner & show, no problem. |

We advise people to go to the Polynesian Cultural Center but NOT to buy the biggest package, that includes the dinner and evening show. (I suspect it was that package that was so expensive, as noted below.) This is because if you arrive when the park opens (around noon) and study the program carefully you can view just about all the same dances that will be in the evening show, AND you also can have other enjoyable experiences in the various 'villages' as well -- such as, among other treats, getting a temporary 'tattoo,' seeing a young man climb a coconut palm, hearing grandmothers softly playing and singing, wandering through different types of well-explained buildings, and chatting with the fine folks there who are dedicated to saving their ancient traditions. We found the dinner itself rather disappointing (because of mediocre food and lack of much ambiance) and while the show afterwards had a lot of flashing lights and energetic music, we actually preferred what we saw during the afternoon of sauntering around the site (and thought that also was much more authentic!). My husband and I (who have on other occasions visited Samoa, Fiji, New Zealand, Tahiti and other Pacific islands) believe that the daytime PCC presents a very fine picture of the various traditional Polynesian-related cultures, and we highly recommend it for all visitors. But, as noted, we suggest saving money by skipping the dinner and show. |

Just drink at the Sea Breeze! Not sure if there are any walkers or hikers in the group but the hike up to Makapu'u Point is wonderful, especially early morning 0800-1000 hours. There may be some whales, take binoculars. Two hours round trip. Take a snack and water with you. |

Also, for the price you pay in admission to the PCC, I would recommend a sunset dinner cruise instead.. Even with military rates, the cost at the Cultural Center was $94.00. We booked online with the help of the ITT office at Hickam. |

1. Fri or Sat luncheon at Orville & Wilbur's Grill, Sea Breeze or one of the NCO or Officers Clubs on HIK or Pearl. 2. Car pool out to Polynesian Cultural Center, Diamondhead Volcano and/or Punchbowl War Cemetery. |

How about you folks who have done this before suggesting group activities. Rota had a number of "get togethers" that were thoroughly enjoyed. |
