We actually flew a "special" flight (KC-10) that was a Training Flight all the way to New Zealand and they only manifested us to the next stop each time, so I'm not sure about the C-17. Since the KC-10 was going to stop in Guam and add another day to the travel time, we changed and caught the C-17 out of Hawaii. Great flight!

Scott has a Channel flight that leaves every Sat. morn. to McChord on to Travis, RON's and flies the next day to Hawaii and RON's there to leave early the next morn. to Richmond. It returns every Tues back to Travis. Be sure to buy your Rail Pass before you leave the States (for US citizens). You can get it for 30 days and ride the rail for free!

I got lucky last August and caught a flight out of Hickam on the 2nd Saturday that I was there. There is usually a flight every Sat. from Hickam to Richmond and then to Alice Springs the next day. I went on a C5 and was the only PAX there and when I came back to Hickam. This was in late August (early Spring there). Summer is over there now with Winter coming in. Walk to the main gate from the terminal and have the gate guards call a taxi for you to the city of Richmond. Don't let the taxi driver charge you more than $12 AUS. Just before the train stn. in Richmond is the NAB with an ATM machine that you can access with any ATM card and get AUS dollars. Get taxi driver to stop there so you can pay him with AUS dollars and not US dollars, although the rate right now is almost at parity instead of the $1.49 AUS per $1 I got last year. Take the train to Sydney, go out the train stn. and turn left and go about 3 blocks to the YHA. Join for about $35 AUS and you will save that amt. if you are going to be there for at least 2 weeks or more. Use public transportation everywhere you go, its cheap and if you are over 65, lots of bargains there like the Zoo, the Opera House and other places. Go to the Blue Mountains on a day trip. Head north on a commercial bus trip that allows at least 4 "stop-offs", i.e., stopping off and staying in a city/area 4 times before completing your RT trip. Have fun - eat a roo-dog (kangaroo hotdog) really good.

John, Thanks for the web link. Jim Quinn stated there was a flight from Hickam to Pago Pago that went on to Christchurch. Are there flights in and out of Christchurch from other locations either Air Force and Navy? Thanks Richard

Richard,

You can find Space-A contact/signup info for Christchurch is located under the Spacea.net Pacific Location Listing.

I would think Space-A opportunities to other islands would be close to zero.

I am interested in travel to New Zealand and the Islands of the Pacific. Like to know how to get in and out of New Zealand and which islands can be visited Space-A. Thanks, Richard Boswell

I think Moogully's advice (get to Hickam first, THEN try for an onward flight) applies mostly to attempting to get to Australia. (Don't forget to obtain an electronic visa before you show up asking to be manifested on any flight to Oz.)

For Alaska and/or Japan, check the "Flight Schedules" forum for west coast bases (McChord and Travis) to see what destinations they serve and how frequently. Also you could read up on the Patriot Express to Japan out of SeaTac [Seattle-Tacoma] International Airport.

If you have enough time and patience, you might just be able to pull this off, but depending on your category and whether the Space-a Fates smile on you, it is likely to be "iffy."

Please do remember to write one or more Trip Reports, including not only the good, but also the bad and the ugly! People not only like to read about the adventures of others, but everyone can learn a lot to help in planning for future excursions. Posting your own story is a way of giving back to those who here voluntarily provide a wealth of helpful information.

If you are CAT VI, you will most likely not get on in Travis. Almost all seats are taken by Dependants during the summer. Your best bet may be to fly to Hawaii, and try to get on from there. Just make sure you sign up at Hickam, and of course Richmond, for your return trip. Rotsaruk.

I am hoping to visit Alaska, Japan and Australia this summer and could use all the info and suggestions anyone has for leaving out of Charleston, Jackson, MS, or Jacksonville. Thanks!
