I've lived in the McChord area for ten years and regularly check departing flight schedules and can truthfully say I've NEVER seen a flight from here to Shaw AFB.

Benjamin:

You said "I can just head down to McChord and try to catch a hop over to Shaw, which are pretty frequent,"

Where did you get that information? I just did a quick scan on this site (in the Flight Schedule Section under McChord) and found Zero Flights from McChord to Shaw from 1 March to the present.

I wouldn't rate Nada as "frequent".

Happy travels, John

I am going to be taking a very similar trip this next week, taking a commercial flight to Kadena tomorrow, then taking whatever hops I can to get back to Georgia. I have researched it a decent amount, it seems like there are typically a few flights per week from Kadena to Travis, and the PATEX on Saturdays now to Seattle. I figure if I go to Seattle, I can just head down to McChord and try to catch a hop over to Shaw, which are pretty frequent, or if I catch one before that to Travis I'll do the same thing. Anyway, if you'd like I'll let you know how it goes...

You are correct, accompanied EML would be cat II and unaccompanied EML would be cat IV. Flying cat IV, you do have to terminate wherever the mission ends, so if it ends in Seattle, you could not catch another flight to another CONUS location. Flying Cat II you would also terminate wherever the mission ends. BUT, you could then continue on as cat III.

Yes, if he gets closer to Pensacola, you could fly commercial to join him, then fly either cat III or cat II together, depending on where the mission was going.

Wow, thank you so much for the post. Your questions lead me to believe that maybe I DON'T know as much as I initially though I did :-) I thought Cat. IV was an unaccompanied with EML order and a Cat II was an accompanied with EML orders. Am I wrong?
I only have 3 children, I was just pointing out that they were a bit older (13,10&8) vs. having toddlers or babies.... which I am sure would make a long layover much more stressful!!
I am not sure about the months. Hopefully, in June some time. I know that is dead in the middle of summer, but I did see somewhere that between May 15 and August 1 it was a 'little' slower... but that's probably a long shot as well. Which is why I thought it might be easier to let hubby take us there. If he gets us closer to Pensaola, say Jacksonville, could I fly back from Jacksonville or Pensacola or somewhere on the east coast without him. Or would I have to pay for a ticket to Seattle and then Space A it to Okinawa?
Cherry - also I do NOT have the appropriate paper work yet, I really wanted to get an idea about all of this Space A stuff first.
Thanks again, I have read countless websites, but just don't feel like I have a good feeling about all of this yet.

Julie, welcome aboard, and good for you for having done some investigation already about possible routes and categories.

1) It is always "better" to fly in a higher priority category, so if your husband can spare the time to escort you that will mean your group can go space-a all the way, that is, within CONUS as well as outside. Yes, he can leave you there and fly back alone. Of course in that case you cannot sign up until he actually goes on leave.

(Why would you be Cat. II if he was with you? Why not Cat. III?)

2) You may not get all the way to Pensacola via space-a but should be able to land somewhere in the southeast (Charleston if on an AF mission; Jacksonville if via Navy, are the most likely) and make your way to Pensacola from there whether by one way rental car, public transportation, or having a friend or relative come to get you.

3) What is the basis of your Cat. IV status? Do you already have the appropriate paperwork?

4) You can fly via space-a only in whatever category you have at the time you are traveling -- so if you are Cat. IV, then you must follow the Cat. IV rules no matter whether you were in a different category on another portion of the trip.
5) In what month(s) are you thinking of making this trip, both ways?

6) Just out of curiousity, when you say you intend to bring your "three older children" does that mean you have younger ones who will not be going?

I am really working hard trying to figure all of this out! So glad I found this site though. My question is, does anyone know what all of my options are with flying from Kadena (Okinawa) to Pensacola, Florida? Or anywhere within driving distance to P'cola?
Is my only option, really to seattle? and if I do that aren't the last minute commercial flight prices really expensive?
My plan was to fly unaccompanied with my three older children, but would it be better to wait until hubby comes along to bump up our class from IV to II?? and if we do this can he fly with us home, leave us in Florida for a couple of months and them we fly back without him?
I know I have a million questions, but I don't know who else can answer them all. I really appreciate any advice I get!!
Also I know that if we take the patex to Seattle then that is our end stop... but once we are in Florida, can we fly back from Florida or can we only get a hop from Seattle? Please help :-)
Thanks in advance,
Julie
