Thanks for all the responses, both KC-10's made the trip to Shaw with only 3 pax, my wife and I included. Met up with another SPAT on the flight, a retired Flight Surgeon from SC. The best part of space a is who you meet along the way. Both flights practiced refeuling each other across the US, allowing each of us a seat with the boomer. They RON'ed in Shaw then escourted a few fighters back to Nellis then on to travis. Shaw has an air show next weekend, "Shawfest". |

John B mentioned the "crystal ball"..... Places like Nellis, RAF Mildenhall, Mountain Home, McGuire, McConnell, and Travis could be in the "tanker" works for these flights. If you have a good contact point (John D's Space-a Pages would be a good place - my server won't let me in there this morning to check) for Shaw, I would start calling. I show 803-895-2307 or 803-895-2357 as a couple of numbers to call. |

Manning SC, is about 30 mins away from Sumter (Shaw AFB), Columbia is also about 30 mins away. I try to help you with flight info out of Shaw, also, only where it is heading. Email me, I will try to help you. If not, good luck Mike |

John, if you are trying to get to Manning and Columbia, Sumter is a perfect place to fly into. It is about half way between the two towns. We live in Columbia so if you need any help or advice while you are here, send us an email. You shouldn't have any problems getting back to Travis from Charleston. They have frequent flights into California. Also, they have had many flights lately into McChord and I believe McChord has frequent flights to Travis. I hope you enjoy your time in S.C. The weather here is wonderful this time of the year. Angie |

Thanks again to all that responded. Just talked to Enterprise and they will rent one way out of Shaw to Charleston, where I will be attempting to get a flight west bound or I might have to fly up to Dover or McGuire to get west. |

Thanks for all for your help. Ron our goal is to get as close to Columbia and Manning SC as possible. My wife is tracing her roots in that area, we will also visit relatives in Greenwood and Greenville. We normally fly into Charleston but Travis is showing 2 tankers with 65 seats each to Shaw. Shaw is a big unknown to me. Anyone out there with a crystal ball that might know where these tankers might go after Shaw? I understand that Shaw has few space a flights out, but what comes in must go out, or so it would seem. |

This page says there is an Enterprise on base http://www.americantowns.com/sc/sumter/yp/car-rental The down side is that Enterprise generally does not do one-ways. I would call and ask if they do one-ways within the region. That is, can you return the car to the Florence Airport, or Columbia, where you can pick up a one-way rental. That page also shows an Avis in Sumter. Give the phone number a call and see who answers. |

According to this there is an Avis in Sumter as well <http://articles.directorym.com/Car_Rental_Sumter_SC-r800378-Sumter_SC.html> but the Avis site shows the closest one to be in Florence, about 40 miles away. |

I spoke to Enterprise in Sumpter and I was told for a one way rental out of the area you would have to go to the Florence, S.C. airport which he said was a 45 minute drive away. |

John, We live about an hour from Shaw. It is near Sumter, SC, a small rural town. I would imagine that the only ground transportation out of Shaw is a rental car from Sumter. As you probably know, Shaw has very few (if any) space a flights out but they do occassionally have flights coming in. Are you trying to get to Charleston? It's about a 2 hour drive from Sumter to Charleston. |

Travis Has 2 flights this Fri. to Shaw AFB SC. Just wondering if anyone is familiar with the services available at Shaw. I found billeting info but haven't found out if ground transportation is available or a rental car office is on base. Thanks for any help you can give |
