Brandon,

BWI is a good choice, even without a car. For example, the show time for their "usual" Monday flight to Germany is early enough in the afternoon that, if you don't get on, you can use public transit to get to Andrews for the "usual" Monday night flight (originating from Jackson, MS) to Germany. A 1-way car rental can get you from BWI to McGuire or Dover (or Andrews) for a night flight if they have any that day. Fact is, this plan has worked very well for me and I'm Cat VI. For a Cat III, the dice in this crapshoot are pretty much in your favor.

Good luck.

Thanks for the advice. Should be a crapshoot either way! I'll probably try Baltimore.

Welcome to the board, Brandon!

Your profile indicates you are currently in Germany, so by the time you are returning there from CONUS you should have a nice "ripe" signup date (because of course you will have signed up at every possible terminal from which you might fly, and done that at the moment you first went on leave, carrying the printed proofs with you).

Therefore if there are 2 available seats on any given flight you should be in an excellent position to get them and so I think there isn't much to choose between the east coast terminals you list (and also Jackson MS, as suggested below). IMO you should select the departure point it's easiest for you to get to and to wait at (if there is a delay of a day or 2 before your number comes up). BWI and Jackson have flights only on certain days BUT just about always take SPATs, whereas Charleston probably goes daily but some may be cargo-only flights for various reasons (weight, hazardous materials).

About all you can do is make the best decision you can, and cheerfully live with it. In any case, you will have stories to tell afterwards!

Perhaps someone who knows about flights from Jackson Miss will comment on the chances to find an open seat from there to Germany.

Depends. When will you be trying to get back? From where will you begin your return to Germany?

Certainly, BWI and Charleston are your 2 best East Coast options for getting to Europe. I wouldn't consider Travis a good gateway to Europe, but if you're taking leave in northern Cali, it's probably your most convenient point of departure for missions headed to the East Coast.

I've read the other threads concerning returning to Germany and it looks like my best best will be out of BWI, Travis, or Charleston. My wife and I will be traveling Cat 3. We won't have a car to drive to different options so the least amount of travel in between would be the best. Which location do you think is the best bet for getting back into Germany? Thanks
