The Charlotte Air Guard almost never has Space A flights. I did a long weekend flight with them to Key West about 3 years ago. It was a great weekend trip,but nothing since. I prefer CHS and have flown in and out of there many times. I can make the drive to CHS of about 200 miles in less than 3 1/2 hours. Since it is close to Charlotte, you have your choice of either staying on base or driving back home if the flights dry up. You can also stop at Ft. Jackson at Columbia, SC, which is half way between if you need to stop to rest. I-77 runs right along side of Jackson. Many of the CHS flights will go to Dover or McGuire to load cargo before heading east across the pond, and many of them will return this way also. I prefer CHS, but, I will still drive north to Andrews, Dover, Norfolk, McGuire, etc. if I see a flight going to where I want to go. I would definitely try for Charleston. We have had very good luck getting out of there and they do have frequent flights to Dover and Andrews if you need a plan B. I've flown with them twice, getting on at their stop at Andrews enroute to Ramstein. And their Pax terminal staff get lots of good reports. They usually fly 3 times a week to Ramstein -- M-W-F. Sometimes they overfly Andrews, so folks are driving to Jackson rather than risk a no stop at Andrews. The problem with this flight is getting the return flight. This is a medevac and most, if not all, of the return flights don't take Space A at Ramstein. Essentially, nobody else flies to Jackson, so getting back to pick up your car is a problem. The solution many have used is to fly to the east coast -- as close to Andrews as possible and then make your way to Andrews in time to catch the return Jackson flight at Andrews. I live in Raleigh and usually go north to the cluster of bases -- BWI, Andrews, Dover and McGuire because it allows for a lot of Plan B options. There is rarely, if ever, a Space A flight out of Bragg/Pope. Most of their flights are transporting troops, not cargo -- and that usually excludes Space A. There are infrequent tanker flights out of Seymour-Johnson that have taken Space A to Europe, but the only way to find out is to call them and ask. Phone number and contact info available on John D's Space-a Pages, click on his link on the upper left of this page. Charleston is the closest "busy" Space A base, but I've never used it. Lately, it has blown hot and cold -- taking no one for days at a time in spite of several departing flights and then clearing the terminal with seats to spare. The problem I see with Charleston is the absence of any good Plan B alternative bases nearby.
