Norfolk is quite dependable for a mid-week departure to Rota. Also the long term parking is right at the front door of the terminal. Returning to Norfolk from Rota is a bit more problematic, we flown back to Dover, rented a car one-way from Hertz and dropped it off at the terminal in Norfolk and picked up our car. |

I am stationed in Rota, and my home is in Charleston. Due to the volcanic ash problem, these last few weeks have seen a tripling of arrivals and departures here in Rota (which is now tapering off). Flights out of Charleston that would normally go somewhere else were re-routed here, which caused an increase in Charleston-to-Rota flights to at least one per day, which is not normally the case. In my experience, Dover has the greatest number of flights to Rota; the last time I was home on leave, in February, I tried for a week to get a flight back to Rota from Charleston, but I finally ended up catching a C-17 to Dover, and I was on a C-5 to Rota four hours after I landed. |

Thanks. That is just what I thought. But checking ahead is best. Two years ago when I wanted to get to Germany from Charleston, I bought my comm ticket to Charleston a couple of months ahead, then found that flights to Germany were going out of McGuire, not Charleston.
I am in Germany right now, having flown MacDill-Charleston-Ramstein, with excellent luck. JC |

We live in Charleston and have at times driven to Dover to catch a hop to Rota. Another alternative is to fly to Dover from Charleston. As dinotars stated, best to monitor the boards and jump at easy fruit. Additionally, monitor last category moved as a posted flight is not necessarily a flight with SPATS. Sometimes the reverse is true as well. Our last trip to Rota (October 2009), a flight was listed as zero pax. We rolled the dice and 90 minutes prior to show time, they posted 40 seats. We went by the passenger terminal and were glad we did. Otherwise we were going to travel to Dover. Another issue with Dover is they usually fly C-5s to Rota. They are not a reliable. Bottom line, you can get there from any of the three places that Tony mentioned. Just be flexible. David |

Tony is right on,as he is a frequent traveler to Rota.His choices of departure locations are correct.These are pretty much the preferred departure locations.Since your travel is in the fall,you can review the situation again.Most likely the options will be the same. |

There are three main hubs in the east coast with flights to Rota; Charleston AFB, SC, Norfolk NAS, Va, and Dover AFB, DE. I've never flown the Charleston-Rota route, but others have and apparently they haven't had any major problems. I've flown out of Dover and Norfolk without problems. Norfolk is limited to the number of flights; about 3 to 4 during the month, including the 2-3 Pat Ex flights, which are the "cadillac" of the flights. If you miss a flight from Norfolk, then you have a situation and must either jump to another hub, fly commercial or go back home. Like I said I've never had problems with Norfolk and prefer it over the others; a friendly-type base.
Since you're living in Altamonte Springs, FL you aren't too far from Tampa's MacDill AFB, where you can catch the "rotator" that flies to Charleston about every other weekend and usually offer space-a seats.
I would suggest that you monitor the flight schedules on this board, especially MacDill and Charleston to see for yourself what best alternatives are there for you.

Has anyone studied this lately? Is Charleston still the best start point for flights to Rota? I am planning to go to Rota in the fall. Jim |
