Lori: If you're planning on making the trip to Ohio in an unaccompanied status with two kids in tow, my recommendation would be to purchase Southwest Airlines discount tickets from San Diego to Columbus. Although things would probably be a lot less onerous if your husband could accompany you, you could find yourself eating time and depleting your travel funds if space-a flights out of March ARB or North Island NAS get cancelled or re-routed (an ever-present possibility!).

I've been gone from the Space-A world for awhile, so I'm gonna jump in on this thread -- let me know if I should make my own. I'm Cat IV looking to fly to Ohio as well in June, from San Diego/SoCal. Not sure how much I want to drive with two little boys in tow, but we can make it work. Please send along suggestions!

Jared,
Nothing is "regular" in the space-a business, however, you can game the system with a little knowledge.

March ARB has C-17's assigned that fly across the pond hauling cargo. They have to eventually return home, and will usually stop at an East coast AMC base to drop cargo before deadheading home.

Without checking frequency of flight departures, I'd say Dover, McGuire, and Charleston AFB's, are the most likely targets. These three bases have C17 assigned, and they are AMC logistics and maintanence hubs. It's easier to service an acft if the receiving base has C17 compatible equipment.

I suggest you look at daily departure schedules for these three bases, plus Norfolk and Andrews to see if any patterns develop for flights on to March ARB.

In the space-a world you need to look at the big picture. It might mean you bite the bullet and take something going to your general direction and then rent a car to retrieve your own car left at the original departure base. Look at it as a small price to pay for all that free travel.

Thank you all very much. I will certainly check into March ARB William. I would just like to be sure I get back to where we leave our car. Are there certain east coast bases that travel to March on a regular basis? We are fine flying into McGuire, Andrews, Dover, Scott, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania anything within a 10 hr driving window. Obviously the closer the better, but we will take what we can get. Thanks again!

Jared,
If you wind up driving down to North Island in San Diego, stop off at March ARB, they sometimes have C17's headed to the East Coast. Better yet, call ahead an see if you can find a live person to ask. March terminal is usually only open when flights arrive or depart. They post a weekly schedule on the door. March is just off of I-15, 4.5 hr drive South of Vegas, on the way to San Diego.

What is your destination? Flights from Nellis are not really regular.

Happy Travels

hey all! We are getting ready to fly Space A (2nd time) we are hoping to hop out of Nellis which seems to be a rare treat. Since they rarely have flights. We are wanting to leave June 14th time frame. I know its a bit early to be looking just trying to see if there is a pattern of flights from Nellis. The flight there will be My husband, myself and our 2 kids. Flight back just the 2 of us as the kids will be enjoying a summer at the grandparents! We are planning to go to North island if no flights from Nellis as they seem to have a good bit and is only about a 5 hour drive. Has anyone had any luck flying out of Nellis? We are not too worried about a flight back again a rare thing, as we are planning on a commercial flight back if we fly from Nellis. I guess any advice is greatly appreciated!! :-)

Susan
