Greetings, Selena: After you've completed your trip, perhaps you'd consider posting a trip report to share your travel experience with the rest of us? I'm curious to see how well your trip works out at that time of year and with that routing.

Selena: Keep the faith. There are plenty of flights from the east coast to McChord on a regular basis. Right now there are not many listed because of the volcano Ash problem right now but once the regular flights start again you should have no problems. Happy Travels.

Selena:

Welcome to the Board!

Your profile indicates you are in Germany, so I am assuming that you are trying to get from Germany to MCChord.

If you have not yet done so, please familiarize yourself with JohnD's SpaceA Pages (link top left), the general layout of this site and the Search Function (magnifying glass at top center) of this site. Nearly all questions can be answered from those three sources. Having read thru the FAQs is a great start and I would suggest reading thru the other sections on JohnD's site as well.

In relation to your proposed trip, traveling SpaceA to/from Germany (or anywhere in Europe) to McChord (or anywhere on the West Coast) in the summer will be very challenging. We try to avoid the Summer (15 May to 15 Sep) as this is typically one of the busiest times (Christmas (15 Dec-10 Jan) being the other) with a lot of competition for spacea. Please ensure that you are prepared to spend more time in terminals than you can imagine. Also be prepared for additional food, lodging and expensive, last minute commercial tickets should you be time restrained upon your attempted return.

As stated often on this site, experienced SPATS avoid Christmas and Summer travel whenever possible.

In sum, can it be done??..Yes, Just be mentally prepared for things to not go as smoothly as you might be expecting...and be pleasantly surprised when they work out.

Happy travels, John

Please note that if the Icelandic volcano continues to disrupt European flights, the plotting of frequent flights to the West Coast from East Ccoast AMC terminals is pretty meaningless since most of those flights are returning home from overseas missions and only stop off on the eastern seaboard for fuel, and or to dump pax/cargo.

Selena,

Welcome to the Board!

Have you checked the flight schedule page and plotted the listed flights from Dover and McGuire to McChord? I'm looking at a hop to McChord in June (or maybe July) and began charting flights since the first of May. In the first 10 days of this month, there's been a flight on 7 of 10 days, a total of 10 flights listed -- most (8) from McGuire and 2 from Dover.

If you are willing to drive a bit further, Andrews had flights 4 days in 10, and BWI and Willow Grove, 1 each. That's 16 flights in 10 days and only 1 day (May 7) when no flight was listed from any base within a one-day drive distant.

If this pattern continues, you should have no trouble getting out to McChord if you are flexible, keep close watch on the flight schedules and call your first and second choice bases to confirm that the flights you want are "still on the board" before you leave. If you check show times closely, you may be able to pick a Plan A and a Plan B flight -- an earlier flight on your departure day, and enough time if you don't get a seat to drive to an alternate base for a later flight the same day.

Happy travels,

Irv Rovner

I'm looking to aim for McChord potentially roughly around Memorial Day weekend but am getting nervous. Last time I flew Space-A, Dover and McGuire were the places to be, both a decent drive of NY, so no need for hotels. Now looking at the flight schedules for the past several days, it's not looking good. Any help or thoughts? Is that pattern usual? I'm only seeing something on the order of one a week, but I know somewhere's got to be flying there more frequently.
