Thanks so much! We are def. eyeing Whidbey Island.

Yes, my hubby got married later in life (and robbed the cradle). He's been retired for 6 years and we have 4 boys (ages 10,8, 4 and 3)---we never lack for excitement ;)

Sara: In addition to NAS Whidbey Island, if the JRB Fort Worth schedule (available online) shows a flight to NAS Fallon (Nevada), you could rent a Hertz car on base there and drive up to Oregon in 3-4 hours. My wife and I did this to visit Crater Lake and other Oregon destinations. The biggest potential obstacle is your need for six seats; difficult for any category, but especially so for Cat. VI. Good luck!

Your husband is retired? All the boys still have dependent IDs?

I suggest looking at the flights out of NAS JRB Fort Worth and find a flight to Whidbey Island, WA. As often as not, there will be 121 seats available. The six of you will make the cut. I've been all alone on one of those and never among more than 10. From Whidbey Island? Rent a car and drive to Oregon.

Thanks! I have read and re-read for the past year. I was hoping that someone has gone that way before and might know a trick or 2. I think it will be a struggle because there are just so many of us. SIGH. But lets be honest--traveling with 4 boys will be painful no matter how we go LOL :-)

In addition to Dinotars' advice, I would add "Read, re-read and perhaps re-re-read all the Q&A at John D's space-a website (link at upper left) plus the info there on every base to which or from which you might fly."

For newcomers to space-a all the material may at first seem just too much to master, but by doing this reading (and note-taking) you will find yourselves absorbing a surprising amount of useful information -- and may even wind up 'educating' some fellow travelers AND some not-well-trained AMC passenger representatives along the way!

Reading past Trip Reports can be useful, too, even when not on your exact itinerary, because they give ideas for ways to be flexible and to apply plans B, C or even D if needed.

Finally, please post a Trip Report yourself when you are done -- first-hand detail can be extremely helpful to the others who are thinking of a similar adventure.

I swore this posted but I can't find it.

We are trying to take our family of 6 from Texas to Oregon on a cat vi I believe (hubby is retired Army). We can fly out of San Antonio/ Dallas, etc. We are flexible! We will fly to WA or CA, whatever will work best. My hubby can take a month off work, so that we can be more flexible.

Thoughts, tips, advice? TIA!
