Bill, thanks for the post. I am not looking to spend a small fortune to get there. I was trying to see how far I could get on a MAC flight. (i.e. CHEAP) I havent given up hope yet. I think I am still going to shoot for the moon. Who knows, you miss every shot you dont take right?

Thanks again everyone for your replies!

Semper,

Alistair

Local tours should be available out of Christchurch or other major cities in NZ:
http://www.coolantarctica.com/Travel/antarctica_travel_home.htm

In the Summer (Deep Freeze) season the Christchurch flights are not scheduled, like the Richmond Sat. late weekly flights out of Hickam. The Deep Freeze support flights tend to be every 3+ weeks.

If you have a specific time frame head to Richmond AUS and travel Emirates Air (great, cheap flight) to Christchurch; do your touring and hope for a returning Christchurch Mission back to Hickam (these tend to be every 3-4 weeks in the past).

You might do a search and look into the civilian icebreaker Antarctic Explorer cruises that go to McMurdo during the ice season. I know they go because I had a friend who gave lectures about the ice during these types of cruises. Just an idea if McMurdo is where you want to go.

Thanks for the posts everyone. I will just fly down and check out New Zealand and go from there. I plan on doing this in Nov/Dec so I should be ok.

Semper,

Alistair

Antarctic support missions start up in Sept, and run into Feb. Outside of that window it's pretty rare to find any flights into Christchurch, New Zealand.
So, if traveling to NZ is one of your goals, plan your travel to that window. The best place to find a flight heading to NZ is usually the weekly flight from Hickam AFB, HI.

Greetings from Okinawa!

I can't be 100% certain but I really don't think Antarctica is on the list of authorized Space "A" destinations. The obvious reason is for the lack of medical facilties for non-duty passengers and I doubt billeting is available too. One way to find out is to access the DoD Foreign Clearance Guide which I don't have access to because I do not have a *.mil computer. Best of luck to you!

Hello all. This is my first post but I have been using this site for over a year and want thank you all for your help in my journeys. I have done my research but cant find the answer to this one so I thought I would throw it out here...

I am an active duty Marine officer currently in Afghanistan. I will be getting home (Okinawa) in November and will have 90+ days of leave. I plan on traveling all over the orient and pacific with one big goal in mind... Antarctica.

Is it possible/ has anyone heard of a way to get to McMurdo SpaceA? If worse comes to worse, I will just hang out in Christchurch and see NZ but I want to see about getting down on the Ice, even if it is just for an couple of hours.

Semper,

Alistair
