When we were NOVA residence headed for Europe, Dover was 108 miles distance [or Andrews (18 mi), BWI ($8 metro ride), Norfolk (easy 45 min hop or 4+ hr drive)].

Now we're in NC, Charleston is 135 miles distance.

Our SPATing is more deliberate now. Truly miss the spontanaity of NOVA.

Also, because of the number of bases in/near NOVA, SPATing was easier than at Charleston. There are more destination options & number of flights.

As for billeting, both are about the same for availability & cost. Though I rarely needed billeting when flying out of ADW or BWI.

When headed west (generally HI & CA), we usually drive north (where 3 families of kids live).

Which base are you closer to? Consider availability of billeting while you wait for a flight to come up or for a plane to be fixed. Both bases are a good gateway to Ramstein or Spangdahlem. There is no telling about flight disruptions due to the Eyjafjallajokull eruption.

Just looking for some experienced travelers out there and preference between Dover and Charleston for getting to Germany. I understand its all about the flights. I guess Im just looking for personal preference, on duty personnel, lodging availability, etc.. Thanks for any input.
