I was at Dover most of last week waiting to go west. There were quite a few flights from Dover to Ramstein, Spangdahlem and Rota, Only problem was they weren't taking many Cat VIs. It would have paid to have 50+ days on your sign-up.

Cherry. I had to laugh when I read your understatement "low cost" airlines will nickle and dime you to death with baggage fees. Last time I flew Ryanair they were charging $4.00 a pound for excess baggage. I found I can get British Air, with advanced booking, for just just a little more and 33kg baggage plus carry-on. Couple of years ago arrived in Ramstein with a novice SPAT couple who had almost maxed out their 140 lb each AMC baggage limit. They were going to Hahn to get a Ryanair to Standstead. They were really proud they had paid the booking fee for extra baggage and had gotten really cheap flight tickets. I had to break the bad news to them that booking extra baggage on Ryanair DID NOT increase their overall limit. I really felt sorry for them, but I guess we all live and learn.

My daughter and I just flew from Charleston to Ramstein on Wednesday, 19 May. The flight was scheduled to depart on Tuesday but had maintence problems and was delayed. Not sure why the flights from Dover were cancelled but it wasn't because of the ash.

Walter:

I just checked The Last Category Moved-Ramstin thread.

Flights have departed Ramstein to Dover & BWI as recently as Thursday & Friday. So volcanic ash does not appear to be the problem for the cancelled flights to Ramstein.

Suggest you start watching/posting The Last Category Moved thread.

Walter:

I think it is unusual to have 32 flights to Ramstein cancelled. What were the reasons for the cancelation?

Last Monday a friend flew the BWI Pat Exp flight to Ramstein. On Tues he e-mailed me from Ramstein that he did not experience any delays etc,. due to the volcanic ash.

I recommend you check with BWI for the next scheduled Pat Exp to Ramstein.

IF Ramstein is closed because of volcanic ash in the air, this would explain why all the flights have been canceled where you are waiting.

And if that IS the case, then going to another base won't do you any good because the problem is at Ramstein (and its approaches by air) rather than being a function of the the base where you are.

IF this is why every flight to Ramstein has been disappearing, and you absolutely cannot wait until the air eventually clears, then consider (1) flying to Rota (if IT is open -- better check! -- and that can change in the twinkling of any eye) from any of the major east coast bases and then going by bus/rail/air public transportation all the way diagonally up through Spain and France into Germany. Or (2) get a space-a flight that continues past Rota to Sigonella or Naples (again, make sure THEY are not closed by the volcanic ash), and take train/bus/air to Germany.

With either (1) or (2) you will spend a lot of time and a fair amount of money even if you sit up in buses or trains all the way or fly on the "low cost" airlines (that charge more for last-minute tickets and will nickle and dime you to death with baggage fees and limitations).

If you can't get a flight from Dover during the day on Monday, you can call Andrews and check on the regular Monday night flight to Ramstein (Jackson, MS ANG). Be sure to ask, of course, that Ramstein is open -- the Iceland volcano has stopped all incoming flights for days at a time. If it's a go, you can rent a car and drive to Andrews in about 2 and a half hours -- and the flight usually has an evening show time. Watch the timing on the car rental -- if you try for a Hertz 1-way rental, they close relatively early.

Charleston has 4-5 flights scheduled today. More tomorrow. Call Charleston by DSN and check on the status of their flights. If it is a good option, try to get a flight down to Charleston. But check McGuire and Andrews before you leave Dover.

Good Luck!!

Other options would be flights from McGuire, Andrews, BWI, Norfolk or Charleston to Germany or Spain (and then Germany via military or commercial air).
