Miramar used to be a NAS, and had, or has, a Navy lodge over by the East gate near I-15. The regular billeting office is up near the clinic at the N end of the base not far from what I call the North gate. Nothing is easily walkable and the distances are long. In the past, I was successful in bumbing rides from some Marines to the North gate, where I caught the city bus into S.D. I've also caught a ride to the Exchange complex where I rented a car, the vendor used to be Hertz. At Miramar, you have to be proactive in finding rides, or your are going to be footing it around with no sidewalks. |

Jared, if you are within close distance driving to Miramar, I advice that you pay a visit to the terminal folks and inquire. They do have schedule loads far in advance and can give you historical data as well. It's a no-frill terminal and cater mostly to active duty Marines going on or arriving from deployments. Bill, where is the billeting office at and how far is it from the terminal? |

Miramar being a Marine fighter/attack base has no organic space-a flights that originate there. Most flight opportunites will be with USAF cargo acft (C5, C17, & C130's) transiting the base. These missions will be your flight opportunities, and they follow no set pattern. Sometimes they will be picking up Marines and cargo for a deployment; at other times, they are dropping the same, and heading back home, usually empty. If you understand this procedure, you can begin to understand how the system can work for you. Good Luck. |

Spouse and I caught the medivac returning to Andrews from Miramar in march. There was wind problems at Andrews and the pax rep advised there was 80% chance we would be diverted to Charleston, which we were. Caught a separate flight to Dover the next A.M. Stay at billeting at Miramar if you can. Very nice and only $31.00 including a continental breakfast. |

Jared This is what we did. In watching the medevac schedule I saw a plane leaving Andrews and going to McCord and no further. The next day there was a plane scheduled to go to Miramar from McCord with no follow-on. I called Miramar in the morning and was told after about five or six questions that yes they had a plane coming in from McCord sometime that day and would be going to Andrews the next day but they didn't know when and I should call back in the evening. I called at 6PM and was told that the plane hadn't arrived and they didn't know what time it would be leaving the next day. We drove the next morning the 1 hour to Miramar early morning and there was a C-17 sitting out in front of the terminal. The civilian pax rep said yes it was going to Andrews today March 12th but he didn't know what time and if they would take stbys. At 11:00 he called us up and took our bags. At 11:15 a young couple showed up and he took their bags. At 12 we boarded the plane and left arriving at Andrews about 7:15. Helpful info from Pax reps,No,is it always this way at Miramar unknown. |

William, you say Miramar does have Space A opportunites, do they normally fly East aside from the medivac flights |

Tommy, and all -- be aware that the westbound medevacs often fill up at Andrews with passengers headed all the way to the west coast, so the ability for space-a people to get on at Scott has been very limited. You might be able to do so, but I think the odds will be against you. Go ahead and try, but do not fail to have backup plans! |

Jared: Miramar does have space A opportunties. The medivac does not return to Scott. It goes from Miramar to Andrews. The personnel at Miramar has always provide us professional service and always answered our questions. Happy Travels. |

So, with that logic, what about a flight on the Miramar flight to Andrews and then back to Scott AFB, IL? We are considering driving to Scott and leaving our car and go to Miramar for a few days, so it would be great to get back to the car. I'm not sure about the Medevac space-a opportunities. |

Jared, Carole has nailed it. The medevacs "usually" have a RON at Travis, with a roll call the next morning for Miramar where the last of the patients de-planes. Then they "generally" turn around and head east to Andrews to drop off the medical team -- IF it is a D.C. area team doing the runs that month. (If it's not a D.C. area team, then of course the flight will go to wherever is home for them.) So in the "normal" situation this means mid-day departures from Miramar with an almost-empty aircraft on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays -- each one day later than when the mission began at Andrews. |

We had a flight poster for Miramar some time ago. Do we have a volunteer? |

The flight you are speaking about to Miramar is most likely the medivac that flies Mon, Wed, Sat starting at Andrews, Scott, McChord, Travis, Miramar. Then it returns to Andrews, I believe. Seats would be determined by the patient load. Flights are available from Miramar. You would need to check their schedule. |

As I have posted before we are going to the East Coast to see family. I have noticed Scott AFB, IL seems to have frequent hops to Miramar, but I rarely see any postings for Miramar hops. I called the PAX and was greeted by a rude individual and got no answers. So my question, does Miramar hop or is it strictly missions not passengers. Thanks for any info. |
