interesting info on Gander as i am headed that way possibly tomorrow night from Rota where i live currently, headed to Travis. of ALL the flights i have caught either eastward from Travis to Spain, and all flights westward from Spain to Travis over a period of 30years, i have never even heard anyone else talk of Gander let alone go there. just recently i have seen it on the terminal monitors... this is an international airport that is open 24/7? thanks in advance!! |

I don't care what anyone tells me [and it's stated somewhere in the regulation I know for sure] but it states that AMC cannot legally "force" a passenger to remain on board an aircraft under any circumstances. If a passenger wishes to deplane, they cannot be refused, however, any and all expenses regarding immigration, customs, lodging, food, onward transportation, etc, etc, will be the responsibility of the passenger and not AMC or the U.S. government, or host country for that matter. But I cannot accept the fact that any aircrew would hold a passenger against his will. That's lawsuit material as far as I am concerned. Just my JPY002 worth. |

Roger, The Navy crews use an FBO across the field from the passenger terminal at St. Johns. We deplaned there in March while refueling enroute to Rota. |

Do the same restrictions apply to St Johns? I have seen flights from NAS Jax to St Johns, then, p9resumably, across the pond. Roger in Jacksonville, FL |

We flew Ramstein to Charleston to McCord, refueling at Gander in March. We were told we had to deplane b/c of refueling hazards. We stayed in the terminal (shopping and eating) after passing through customs. We were told that we could not mingle with the commercial PAX. I guess the bottom line is that after landing at Gander a surprise will be awaiting you. You may, or may not, deplane. If you do, go shopping in their store. It had some of the best winter-wear I've ever seen :-) |

I wonder if it has anything to do with baggage? Your suitcases could have been in the middle of a large pile secured by netting, which could mean a reshifting of many bags if a couple were taken out of the middle of the pile. Didn't realize that Gander would be so expensive and hope that hotels and meals are more reasonable elsewhere in Canada. Roger in Jacksonville, FL |

We flew from Charleston to Germany and back via Gander in April and all passengers deplaned both times. We waited in the commercial passenger terminal and both times they eventually opened the restaurant for us. Our stop-over lasted only 1.5 to 2 hours, then our flight crew members came to pick us up and take us back to our plane. We did not have to clear customs. |

I have stopped at Gander three times to refuel. Two West bound and one East. In all three cases we had to deplane and wait in the commercial passenger terminal. We did not clear customs and immigration and returned to the plane after about an hour or two. As far as leaving the flight there or trying to join it there I'd say your chances are pretty dicey. Just be glad you don't have to shell out to spend the night. |

We were on a flight from Ramstein to the states and we had to stay at Gander overnight. In our circumstance, I see no reason why we could not have stayed at Gander since we cleared Immigration officials and had all our luggage. Also our stay was expensive. A room was over a $100,00 a night and teh food was expensive. We would have preferred to refuel and keep on going. Happy Travels. |

Rich, I don't know if this will help as it was going the other direction. The other day I was returning from Ramstein to Charleston with a refueling only stop at Gander. The refueling took place with all pax remaining on the plane. I asked if we could jump off and terminate our flight there. I received a resounding negative reply. I don't know if it was because of the refueling since I don't believe we were at a terminal or if Immigration officials weren't available but regardless we were told we couldn't get off. |

CHarleston claims we can't deplane at Gander reflueling stop on the way to Ramstein. I've read about it on this board. Any help... Please. |
