We just arrived from Rota. Of the three flights (McGuire, Norfolk, Charleston) comming back that day, only one (McGuire) took Space-A passengers.
We were told tankers were not taking Space-A pax.
Don't overlook Patrioc Express out of BWI.
Earl's right, school is letting out shortly.

Last time I analyzed the flight schedule postings over a period of months, Charleston had the most frequent flights to Ramstein, and also to Rota.

What you have to do is look at past history, and conclude from that. JC

In Oct 2009 I had a 5.5 hour flight on a KC10 from McGuire to Moron; where I rode 70 minutes on the Wednesday Moron base motor pool bus to Rota.

See the Pepperd flight information forum: Ramstein recently shows more flights to Sigonella and Souda Bay. Sigonella has frequent flights to Rota and Souda Bay. A potential alternate to the direct route Norfolk to Rota is: e.g. McGuire->Ramstein-> Sigonella->Rota

Jeff, Take a look at the FAQ on here if you haven’t already done so. Helpful info on there.

Regarding Rota, Jeff, I got back from a trip to Rota. Flew from Wright Patterson (WP) AFB, Ohio (Dayton) to Rota on C-5. And back from Rota on a KC-10 to McGuire the day I wanted to fly back to US.

WP has about one or two flights per week to Rota, and or Germany. Most of the time they fly via either Norfolk or McGuire or Dover.

Problem you have is you are getting into the peak time and as a retiree VI status you will be competing with many other folks to get on flights.

If you wait and catch the WP>Rota at Norfolk it may be harder to get on as Cat VI at Norfolk.
If you rented a Hertz car and drove to WP and got on the flight from starting point (WP is code FFO) your odds may be greater than Norfolk.

Nothing is written in stone. For example, I got on a hop last July to Rota out of WP on a C-17. Was direct flight nonstop to Rota.

While this time of the year presents problems for CAT VI, it can be done.

I do not recommend Dover, McGuire, BWI, Charleston, and Norfolk for retirees in summer; but, I have seen retirees get out during the summer from those places.

Tom is correct, there are lots of flights from Charleston to Spain and Germany. On the C5 to Rota we stoped in Charleston. Problem was many C-17s heading overseas...but, few, if any, seats were given for space-a. Then you see a few leave with many seats. Depends on cargo and other factors.

There are no guarantees with space-a. Sometimes works fine….other times you turn into some sort of terminal rat and learn terminal Survival 101.

If you need any info on Rota or Spain in general please message me.

Jeff,
Charleston AFB, is in Charleston, SC.
Pope AFB, is in NC!
Suggest you also expand your search to include McGuire AFB, NJ.

Jeff - I don't know where you live, but Charleston is also a good place to catch flights to Rota.

Hello everyone! I've used space-A a few times while active, but this is my first time trying in the "retired" status. I'm looking to go to Rota and have already signed up at Dover and Norfolk. Just wondering if there are any others terminals I should be looking to sign up at? Thanks.
