Tina, not to discourage you but just want to show you what it looks like right now. I'm traveling with a 2 and 3-year old from Travis to Okinawa. Along the way I have spoke with so many families that have spent thousands of dollars on hotels and commercial flights as things haven't worked out. I have watched 4 flights in the last two days leave Hickam and not one has gotten past a Category 3. We are Cat IV also. Just want you to be aware that it is really not a great time. Have you looked at Elmendorf? Honestly with the way things look at Hickam I wish I had gone to Elmendorf and then to Japan from there. The flight times are longer but I believe there is less competition there. Good luck. Kristine

"...if i was alone i would totaly do it, even if i had just one kid. but having 2 i think is just too much stress."

Good thinking Tina! I'm sure that there are space-a-ing mothers with youngsters in tow that have made the trip in question with no problems whatsoever. Based on their good fortune, they'll no doubt encourage you to go for it. But, there are probably an equal number of horror stories that go untold by unaccompanied moms with kids that wish they hadn't subjected themselves and their little ones to the energy- and spirit-sapping rigors (not to mention unanticipated costs) accruing to the ever-present down sides of space-a travel (e.g., flight cancellations, re-routing, denied boarding, etc.).

Tina,

Even if somebody successfully traveled the same route/time last year (or yesterday for that matter) doesn't mean that your experience would be the same. Space-A is (like the stock market) unpredictable and chances of a successful trip can change overnight.

Thank you for the info! i did read the two links you gave me and i thought maybe i may luck out with somebody who just happened to travel same time last year to japan lol!
and im not worried about return since ill be returning in a year. i was mostly concerned about being able to get off hawaii. from okinawa a commercial flight would be cheaper than from hawaii so i was kinda expecting to pay that. but after thinking more and more, if i was alone i would totaly do it, even if i had just one kid. but having 2 i think is just too much stress.
I will check out the schedule ffrom kaneohe just in case.
thank you guys again for the help!

Tina,

Welcome to the world of Space-A travel.

Kaneohe's schedule is online (link available from the www.spacea.net location listing) so you can review potential destinations from Kaneohe.

Tina:

Welcome to the Board!

If you have not yet done so, please familiarize yourself with JohnD's SpaceA Pages (link top left), the general layout of this site and the Search Function (magnifying glass at top center) of this site. Nearly all questions can be answered from those three sources. Having read thru the FAQs is a great start and I would suggest reading thru the other sections on JohnD's site as well.

In relation to your proposed trip, traveling SpaceA to/from Hawai to Japan in the summer will be very challenging. We try to avoid the Summer (15 May to 15 Sep) as this is typically one of the busiest times (Christmas (15 Dec-10 Jan) being the other) with a lot of competition for spacea. Please ensure that you are prepared to spend more time in terminals than you can imagine. Also be prepared for additional food, lodging and expensive, last minute commercial tickets should you be time restrained upon your attempted return.

As stated often on this site, experienced SPATS avoid Christmas and Summer travel whenever possible.

In sum, can it be done??..Yes, Just be mentally prepared for things to not go as smoothly as you might be expecting...and be pleasantly surprised when they work out.

Happy travels, John

PS: Answers to what are my odds and about PatEx flights are found at JohnD's SpaceA Pages FAQs:

I have read all on space-a and flights leaving hickam and there seems to be slim chance of making it to yokota. i talked to the guy at hickam and he said normaly i would fly to guam, 18hr layover, then kadena, then yokota.
couple questions before deciding to drop 2grand or be lucky with space-a!
1. what is a guesstimation of odds of getting out of hickam or kaneohe to final destination yokota (or atsugi would be nice)starting june23rd timeframe? ill be cat IV i think because spouse is deployed 365days. and i will be traveling with a 2 year old and 3 month old.
2. do they have straight to yokota? are all the routes to kadena?
3. if they only go to kadena, area there frequent flights to yokota?
4. i never knew Kaneohe had mac flights. do they go to yokota? or better odds than hickam?

iknow im flying in peak season, which is why i was wondering if anybody flew last summer would have any idea what im up againnst?! i would love to save the money but if it looks like slim pickings, i will totaly suck it up and buy a ticket.
thank you for any help!
