I am also a Cat IV from the midwest and fly from Italy to usually Norfolk. I then catch a commercial flight to the Midwest. One piece of advice I have is to spend the night at a hotel when you arrive. It does cost more and it adds to the travel time, but it's nice to have a night to recoup before moving on. I've done it both ways (with hotel and without) and it was easier to spend the night. I do the same thing on my way back home.

To make a last minute commercial ticket affordable, I either cash in frequent flyer miles or use Southwest military fares. I don't believe Southwest services Charleston until next year, though.

I just did Spang>Chas>Ramstein>Spang last week. I think. I am class III and waited an entire hour for a flight out of Spang. Coming home was a bit more challenging and a I had a day and a half wait to get back to Ramstein and then got a ride from a fellow SPAT back to Spang to get my car.

I would prepare for a possible few days of camping in the Chas terminal. There are limited transportation/food/billeting options there but it is completely doable.

I've read here and been advised that Spang is often less crowded and has more flights to Charleston than Ramstein. I'm leaving June 18 w my 2.5 yr old as a Cat IV (I know, I know- terrible timing) and I plan on taking a commercial flight frm Charleston to the Midwest. Any advice? I'm a first-timer and my friends with experience have either lived on the east coast or at least near a base. I know I need the necessary paperwork, to reserve by email or fax, but thats about it. I also have questions about billeting and ground transportation that I will post elsewhere.
