I think DeeDee is "shack" in her response: I'll wait until I begin Terminal LV.

John D -- no response yet from AMC contacts.

Once again, thanks to all of you!

Cheers!

Thanks DeeDee - can you please send me the specific reference in the AFI as I didn't see where it said you couldn't but I didn't see where it said you could either. Based on what I've seen with folks retiring they combine the two but I'm not sure how that plays into signing up for Space-A.

It's a good question and I may want to add this one to the Space-A FAQ!

John G - The AFI specifically allows PTDY to be taken in conjunction with terminal leave.

But, this might not matter anyway. R states he is probably not going to fly until he is on terminal leave. Terminal leave means that he is cat III. PTDY is cat V. Cat III will trump Cat V regardless of the Cat V sign-up date. So, just don't fly until you are on terminal leave. (Besides, the PTDY you are taking is for "job pre-separation or retirement relocation activity such as job or residence search." Unless you are looking for a job/residence in Europe, you are better off waiting until you are on terminal leave anyway.)

Yeah, I checked the leave reg and couldn't determine a good answer. Yes, leave still has to start/end in local area but I'm not sure that applies to terminal leave.

JohnD:

I think R Shoon's situation/question is one that used to (back in the day) be prohibited...you were not permitted to take PTDY in conjunction with leave (ordinary). The leave had to start-finish in the local area. His question seems to be more of a leave-reg question than a transportation-reg question. Sorry, I don't have an up-to-date answer...I retired in 89.

Happy Travels, John

...oh by the way, I left out that if the PTDY is Cat-V then your dependent stays home and you get to drink all the German beer on your own. :-)

John D -- thank you very much for the prompt reply! I'll try and run down a definitive answer thru my contacts at AMC (I'm an AFSPC guy, so I'm not holding my breath my effort will be a quick one--smile).

Cheers!

I don't know the definitive answer but here's what I do know:

You're supposed to have (at least for USAF) two leave forms - one for the PTDY and one for the regular/terminal leave. So, if you signup using the PTDY leave form it wold expire in xx days (20 days if you are CONUS based and have not used any PTDY days). Per the above you could signup for your outbound flight using your PTDY Leave Form and your return using your regular/terminal leave form.

Now, if you are PTDY for House Hunting you'd be Cat-III (DoD Reg Table C6.T1., Item 14) but the regs are not totally clear if terminal PTDY is considered "house hunting." AFI 36-3003, Table 7, Rule 4 is what's referenced on a PTDY leave form for separation PTDY.

Worse case you'd be Cat-V (DoD Reg, Table C6.T1., Item 25) for the PTDY portion and Cat-III for the terminal leave portion.

I would contact AMC HQ for a definitive answer as you'll get a several different interpretations from folks here (including some that say they did it "no problem") as well as from different Pax reps.

That's my stab at it anyway! Please let us know if you get the definitive answer!

OK gang, first off I searched the site and I even went to DoDI 4515-13R . . . but I'm gonna request some expert help to ease my mind (smile).

Status: Active Duty, on PTDY orders, and I transition to Terminal LV status in a week.

Scenario: Want to travel Space-A w/ my dependent wife to Europe.

Question: Can I sign-up my wife and myself for Space-A now, on PTDY status, and attempt to get on a flight after Terminal LV has started?

Concern: DoDI appears to allow me to take one dependent w/ me on Space-A while in PTDY status. However, I likely will not leave from CONUS-to-OCONUS until Terminal LV timeframe begins. Can my Space-A request while PTDY become void once Terminal LV timing begins?

Thanks to all for a wonderful board/resource!

RL
