Thank you everyone! I am just trying to get close to NC even if I have to drive. I just moved from Ft Bragg so I am trying to go back to see my niece graduate. :-) |

Emily, also keep an eye on the Navy flight from K-Bay. You might get lucky and find one going to Jacksonvile or Norfolk. Also if you get to North Island, you could try for Jacksonvile or Norfolk from there too. Just remember the Navy will not have box lunches, so pack a sack lunch. |

Emily, It is the nature of the Space A beast -- the best route is the one flown by a plane with empty seats going in the direction you want to go. You simply have to be flexible and keep yourself informed along the way. Chances are you will get a flight from Hawaii to Travis or McChord. Both have frequent flights to Charleston, Dover and Andrews -- almost every day to one or more of them. Maybe once or twice a month they will fly to Norfolk or Pope (i.e. Ft. Bragg, NC). Any flight may or may not take Spat's -- so the advice is: take the seats that are open. Getting a McGuire flight puts you in New Jersey, but this is usually better than passing it up to wait for a later flight to, say Charleston, a lot closer, only to have the later flight cancelled or go with no Spat's. Let's say you get to Travis or McChord and there's a flight to McGuire or Andrews. Charleston may be closer for you, but if you get to the USO or an available computer, check this Flight Schedules page here to see if there's a McGuire or Andrews to Charleston flight later that day (or early the next day). If not, call the terminal desk by phone -- chances are there's a DSN phone you an use -- to see if there's a flight there that can get you closer. But, be sure to check the aircraft type, if it's a small jet, it may have a 30 pound luggage limit. Chances are you will need to get a one-day, one-way rental to finish your trip to NC. McGuire, Dover, Andrews, Norfolk and Charleston are all well within a one-day drive. One trip from Ramstein, I failed to get on a flight to Baltimore (where I had my car), caught a later flight to McGuire. After landing at McGuire, I got a flight two hours later to Andrews, very close, obviously to Baltimore. So, be flexible and take whatever goes in your direction. Keep checking info on this page or call ahead to the base you can fly to if it has anything that can get you closer. Happy travels, Irv |

Yes, active duty must be in leave status to register (signup) for Space-A travel. More signup questions are answered here in the Space-A FAQ. |

I have looked all over forums and threads for my question but haven't found it so maybe you all can help. I went to sign up for space A but it says that the AD member has to be on leave. Does that mean the day we want to leave or now? My hubby's leave is on Monday and we want to leave Monday, but I would like to get signed up. Do we have to wait til Monday to sign up? Also we want to go from Hawaii to NC, what is the best route even if it is to SC or Virginia? |
