Yes, Jennifer, don't let those who take themselves much too seriously, ruin it for you. And don't worry about "the exercise" (darn - I almost said the name!) jamming things up in Honolulu. "The exercise" happens every couple of years and doesn't make a dent in anything except military lodging. Call Hector and his crew at "Discount Hotels Hawaii" 808-394-2112 and they'll find you a bargian hotel right downtown Waikiki that will make the VQ at Hickam or Pearl look like Dogpatch.

A perfect example of a thread getting "HIJACKED".

Sorry Jennifer. I hope your question has been answered.

Leland and Marea B,
Rimpac may have it's own website, but following the rules of this board IT SHOULD NOT BE DISCUSSED HERE.
You have heard on previous threads about some people ruining things for other people who follow the rules, this is a perfect example.
Let's just end this thread now!

Rimpac actually has its own official Navy website:

http://www.c3f.navy.mil/RIMPAC_Media_Page.html

They are going out of their way to publicize it. According to this it runs 23 June to 1 August.

English lesson for yours truly:

1. "!" exclamation marks

2. Military exercises (not exercising, although I'm sure military personnel are constantly "exercising". So maybe I was half right!

Senior moment!

Leland and Marea: You both have good points and asked good questions and made good comments.

While it is true that alot of the information regarding military exercising, deployments, security issues, etc, etc falls under the FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) and is widely available online and in the news, I believe Dirk Pepperd has mentioned that he prefers this board not be used to discuss or disseminate that information. That may explain Carole G.'s 9 explantioin marks.

I know it's a bit easy to slip up and make a mention about base entry requirements (there's an entire thread about it that was posted just a few days ago), it may be a good idea just to keep a low profile, so that the goodness of this board is not jeopardized, you know - - like some big wig ordering it be taken down or something like that.

Just my JPY002 worth.

Happy Travels

If you are concerned about what was posted on Rimpac all you have to do is google it. It is public knowledge that it happens every 2 years, it is public knowledge that those countries plus more are there, it is public knowledge months in advance on what exact dates it will be held.

Greetings, Jennifer: I recommend the Travis-Hickam-Yokota/Kadena route. Your Space-A category will move you pretty quickly onto any aircraft headed where you want to go. If you are going to be stuck anywhere along the way, you and your family would enjoy Hawaii a whole helluva lot more than Alaska...especially your teenagers.

what you can have problems with is lodging in Hawaii. RimPac (military war games held every even year in Hawaii that includes Japan, Australia, Chile, Singapore, S. Korea, Canada, US, etc... is usually held around that time of year and the bases there will be Packed! I know there is something going on in Canada in June, so not sure if it will mean delays in Hawaii, usually it is June/July or July/August time frame. So if you get stuck you are stuck and no lodging available on base. This can also interupt regular flights that are common now but change because of what they are doing.

Thanks so much! I know that occasionally there will be a flight going from Travis to Elmendorf onto Yokota or straight to Kadena, so I guess that might give me another option if one of those were to show up. I just know we always have flights coming in from Hickam and Anderson.

Jennifer:
Were I you, I'd shoot for Travis, then Hickam. Travis has lately been showing multiple flights to Hickam daily, with two or three of them per week going on to Kadena or Anderson then Kadena. You can manifest all the way on any flight showing Kadena as a final destination. With your CAT II priority, you have an excellent chance of flying on any flight you choose. Both Travis and Hickam know how to treat active duty families. Be sure to keep a sharp eye on schedules, but ALWAYS call PAX Reps directly before making terminal arrival plans. West-bound Travis flights very often leave earlier that recording indicates, so be very flexible. A 0600 show time often turns into 0500 at the last minute due to more seats opening up. The more seats, the more processing time is required and show times move back to accomodate. Have a great vacation and a safe flight home!

My husband (active duty), my two teenagers and I are flying home from Kadena, Okinawa to the States for a few weeks this summer. With EML that puts us as a Category 2, correct? Getting to the States shouldn't be a problem, I'm trying to figure out the best way to get us back to Kadena.

As a category 2, how likely would we get a flight from Travis to Hawaii? I know we normally have lots of flights from Hickam to Kadena coming in. I just don't know if we could save the extra money in airfare and try to get to Hawaii through Travis or if we should just fly directly to Hawaii. Total cost of tickets to a commercial airport near Travis is around $950, while commercial to Hawaii is around $2,100.

We will start making our way home on July 9, and we will have until July 17 to make it back to Kadena. I know nothing is for sure, just trying to think it through all the way and weigh cheaper costs against the likelihood of getting a flight. Thanks for any help y'all can give me!
