Pop-ups do happen! Now there's flight on the Andrews "future flights" recording for tomorrow, Tuesday 6/15, to Ellsworth AFB SD. (Subject of course to all the usual warnings -- may be scratched, may not take pax, may leave early, may be delayed...)

I do not recall EVER before seeing one from ADW to Ellsworth (and I think I would have noticed and recalled it, because Ellsworth is one place we stayed in base lodging during a 2001 cross-country roadtrip that included exploring many attractions in the nearby Black Hills).

There are numbers listed at Spacea.net for the 185th Air Refueling Wing (Sioux City) and the Minneapolis folks if needed.

Hi Klaus,

This is a "shot in the dark". Call the 185th Air Refueling Wing in Sioux City Iowa. I don't have a number but they have a site. Google Guard Sioux City or something similar.

Minneapolis also has some guard or reserve units--I believe that are C-130's and you might call them also.

I have little info but did talk to Sioux City a couple of years ago. You might get some info that would help--maybe one way with a commercial ticket from your destination.

I obviously have some ties to the Dakota's (Dakota Ray). I many times fly into Omaha commercially because of the rates and drive to South Dakota.

Let us know if you find some useful info.

Andrews has *occasional* flights to Fargo, ND, but nothing regular. I have no idea what type of aircraft fly that route, no idea how good the space-a chances are, nor how you would get BACK from there (which I presume is in the plan?).

In many cases, and this may well be one of them, you are actually going to be better off buying a round trip ticket on a civilian airline far enough in advance to get their lowest fare. Otherwise you could end up spending much more money while waiting around various terminals hoping for a flight -- costs that would include lodging, food, taxis, rental cars, bus or train to the ultimate destination... not to mention potentially having to buy an expensive last minute full-fare one way ticket back East even if you DID get to your original destination (which is iffy).

Not to mention wasting LOTS of time en route! But I see from your profile that you are a math teacher, so I guess you definitely can "do the numbers"! ;-D

And maybe you have all summer, until school resumes, to make this journey? In that case, please let us know via a Trip Report, how it goes!

I used the search function, but did not locate any thread discussing above referenced subject. Has anyone had experience trying to hop to North or South Dakota from Andrews or Dover?
