I've been trying since Saturday 19 June on Category V with 4 passengers. Saturday we were offered 2 seats on a plane with 64 seats. On Sunday, we were offered 1. That was the best we've done and we've made it to like 7 of the 9 flights offered since Saturday. Today's plane has been breaking down since yesterday with 42T seats....Its not looking good. The place was packed and there have been people there on Category 4 trying for 2 weeks....The only reason we were offered a few seats (2) and (1) to be exact were because people in higher categories needed more seats than the (2) and (1) left on Saturday and Sunday. In retrospect. I should have taken what I could get and pay to fly the rest of my part out there ;0( |

Welcome to the board. Watch the schedules for both. Not even a crystal ball could predict that. It just depends on how many other people want to go in higher categories, how many seats are available, how many seats you need and how many planes are flying in the direction you want to go., etc. Good luck and happy travels. |

Well, darn. I think I might just break down and take a flight out of SF and make it a rt since getting back from HI seems to be a problem too. I'm just bummed but will try it again in an off season. |

Transportation around San Diego is easy on their bus system. You can google to get route maps and times. There is also light rail service but I am not sure where they service to. Taxi's can come on base so you can get from downtown to the terminal or billeting with little problem. I don't know about suitcase restrictions on the buses or trains but they will surely have airporter vans. Roger in Jacksonville, FL |

USO Travis - 0600-1800. Get there before 1800 and they'll loan you a blanket and pillow, but you'll have to sleep in a seat in the terminal. Depsite the signs prohibiting sleeping there, the terminal night shift won't fight you over it. We've done it many times. |

Rhonda, I don't think the USO stays open through the night. At least it didn't when we were there in Mar. You will just have to check with North Island to see if they have any seats taken for duty paxs. It is still your best chance. |

I called Travis but they won't say if they think I have a chance. I understand that. It's risky this time of year and I knew that before I started out. I had a room there but they lost my reservation. lol Oh well. |

Hi Carole, I was planning on staying at the USO at Traivs if I can't get a room. If I have to fly down to SD, then I'd try to get out with SW. Lodging at North Island...not sure. Need to call them. |

Why don't you call Travis to see if they think any Cat VI will be able to get out to Hawaii tomorrow. Have you called North Island to inquire about their flight to Hickam? They have dropped some seats, but still have 50+. How are you going to get to San Diego? Southwest? Then how are you going to get to North Island form San Diego? Do you have any prospects for lodging at Travis or North Island? |

First off call NI and see what chances are. Could be a troop movement and all seats are taken. Numbers are on John D's pages. If your not signed up at North Island do so immediatly. after that only you can make the decision. Remember nothing is garanteed with Space A but it doe's sound better than prospects at Travis right now. |

Ok...sitting in SF, CA wondering what to do: try to get out of Travis with two flights going out tomorrow with only 10 seats...try to fly out of SF or fly down to North Shore? San Diego with 120 seats. What do you experienced floks think about my options? Am I missing any other opportunities? thanks, Rhonda in limbo |

Rhonda, Getting back will be a challenge, as well. We were at Hickam this past March and had to revert to Plan B(using airline miles) to get back to Travis. You may luck out if they have a couple of big planes like a C-5 or C-17 to clean out the terminal. A lot of Cat III families are on the move now with school out. Of course, Hickam is a busy destination. So hope for the best and maybe things will work out for you. You should be able to make it back to the east coast from Travis. Good Luck! |

Try Hawaiian Airlines for the best one fares, if you get in a pinch. |

Thank you everyone! I did sign up from Travis to Hickam back in early April. We have the funds to make it to Hickam before Saturday just in case but of course we would rather use them elsewhere. I will definately check out North Island since it sounds like the best alternative. We don't have a deadline to get back to VA so I'm hoping to hop back from Hickam. How does that look for us? Also, anyone know of any oneway flights to Honolulu if we end up having to fly commercial? |

There's a March-bound flight out of Travis LAM, but if you can't make that flight, Southwest Airlines from Oakland to San Diego is $164/per person/one-way. It's probably cheaper to fly to March then rent a one-way car to North Island. Good luck. |

Rhonda, Welcome to this board. Being a Cat VI at Travis at this time of the year(high season for Cat III, Cat IV, V) is going to be challenging. If you have a good sign up date and they even get to Cat VI during roll calls you might get out to Hickam. North Island NAS in San Diego has a flight to Hickam on Wednesday with 84 seats on a C-40. Your chances might be better there. You might consider that if you are signed up there or can get signed up.. I would call them. Let us know how you make out. Good luck. |

Rhonda: There has been nothing to Hawaii out of March in quite a while. North Island has flights to Hawaii often. Suggest you give them a call to find out what is going out. Your profile does not give your travel category so it is hard to recommend what you should do. Happy Travels. |

Travis is about the only game in town in "that area". You could try March or North Island or even McChord but then you're traveling quite a distance on a "maybe." You may be better of sticking it out at Travis. |

My daughter and I are traveling today. We arrive in SF, CA this evening but Travis has no flights to HIC on Tuesday. Is there any other options for travel in that area? Is there a chance we can get out this week some time? I'm retired. Would like to make HIC by Friday if possible. Thanks! Rhonda |
