April, as stated by John G below, C-5s.

The oldest ones in the system!

Good news is the C5s here will be replaced by C-17s. First one is due in this fall. Rest replaced next year. Yeah !!

The C5s at WP have a high rate of mainteance delays or no flys.

When they do fly easy to get out on one to Ramstein and Rota.

Call WP pax terminal for flight info.

This week had two Rota flights(C5s), Italy (C5) flight, PR (KC 135) flight and Ramstein (C-17)flight.

Harder to catch one of the WP C-5s back from europe. They mostly fly back via Rota and/or Moron. But may be too much waiting time to catch a WP C5 from Rota/Moron back to WP.

I gave up "waiting" at Rota last month and flew back to McGuire and rental car back to WP.

Earl, Would you by chance know what type of plane flies from WP to Germany? I am considering trying this flight later this year. Thanks!

Thanks for the replys everyone. We will be traveling back in July, I don't really mind when, because my husband is deployed, so we have plenty of time. I do have a family member as my "back up" plan to pick us up in Dover, it's a 9 hour drive. Thankfully if all goes as planned, and we make it to Dover, that was our last base so we know lots of people there that would be willing to help us out and let us stay with them:-) I really hope this works out.

And I will definatley add our names to the list for Andrews. Thanks.

Don't know when you are planning this trip. Since your little ones are both pre-school age, would your chances be better if you flew in what is "off season" for space-a, fall or spring? At least you would not be competing for seats with all those pcsing and all the families flying with school age children on summer vacation.

Part 1:

Christina, hi from Wright Patterson AFB (WP). I fly to/from WP to Europe often.

You can get a hop from Dover to WP on a returning C5 to WP. But, you may have to wait a long time for a flight from Dover to WP. Terminal waiting with kids can start to eat at your wallet -- can run up the tab $$$$

As far as Andrews to WP, yes there are frequent flights from Andrews to WP. But, these are normally C-21 with weight limit for your bags (each person) of 30 lbs each. Also, there may be seat limitation on these flights. Max is 6/7 seats on C-21. But, there could, and most likely will be, duty paxs on these flights. So the available seat number goes down.

Cristina, if you could get to BWI, you could fly commercial to Dayton on AirTran. Advance purchase one-way tickets are less than $100, double that for shorter notice, but it might be worth it to avoid the drive.

Christina, I fear that there is little chance that you will be able to get a timely connecting flight from most of the East Coast bases into Wright-Patterson.

Flights from Andrews to Wright-Patterson (Dayton area) are much less frequent than they were just a few years ago. Now and then one pops up on the recording, but not very often. Furthermore, I am not sure what kind of aircraft they are flying and it may well be one with a strict 30# per person baggage limit.

Rickenbacker ANGB (Columbus area) has even less frequent flights in and out.

Is it possible that a relative could drive to McGuire or Dover -- or wherever you landed -- to pick you up? We often drive from Northern Virginia to Dayton in about 8 hours including fairly frequent stops -- it could be done in 6 or 7 hours by someone with a lead foot, a nice large gas tank, a thermos and homemade sandwiches.

Alternatively, could you rent a car one-way and drive yourself?

I believe there are a fairly good number of flights between Andrews and Wright-Patt. You may want to check them out and include them in your contingency planning.

Dover is the only base I know of who flies into Wright Patterson on a regular basis. You will also be able to fly from Wright-Patterson to Germany without much of a problem. Happy Travels.

Welcome to the board, Christina.
Looking at Dover's schedule for the month of June shows several flights to Wright Patterson. It could also be the same plane on several days that was dropped for Maint issues. Probably, Dover will be your best chance to get to Wright Patterson.
Good luck.

Hi everyone, I'm new to the whole Space A and have been reading tons of helpful information, but am still a little worried about the whole process. I will be travelling with a toddler and an infant from Mildenhall, Cat IV, and our final destination is Ohio. Our plan as of now is to get to Dover, then to Wright Patt. I have seen a few flights the past few months from Mildenhall to Rickenbacher, but not very many, so I don't have my hopes up. I put my name on the list for Mildenhall, Dover,Ramestein(to get back), Wright Patt and another one in Ohio.

What are some other ways to get there besides Dover that would be easy? Dover's the main one we'd like to try to hop to just because we were there before and know people so if we get stuck it wouldn't be a huge deal. Thanks.
