Thanks Brenda, I gotta say the 6pm free for all at billeting is a real unwanted blast from the past. Several Q's used to do that and it was quite unconvenient. Nothing worse than starting to instigate "plan B" after hanging around base for hours. Maybe its a temporary thing. Pat |

as second time spats, hubby and I drove from Va Beach to Dover to catch a hop on to Ramstein. Spent the night in terminal with many flight options and about 22 Cat VI waiting for 3 days. We watched all flights drop off the schedule one by one. At 7AM we were in billeting and slept until around 2 and called the terminal to see if the flight for 2100 was still on . Got dressed and decided to just stop back by the terminal before going to get something to eat. We were again told the only chance of getting out that day was the 2100 flight and no released seats at the time. We knew the number of people waiting would just continue to grow with each day so we were not too optimistic. We were heading back to the car when we heard an announcement that a flight to Ramstein roll call was beginning. We flew back in with puzzelled looks as did the desk crew. It had just popped up she said,. So with in 30 min we were manifested thorugh on a C5 with only 6 other spats that had refused to leave the terminal "in case"... 8 hrs later we were in Ramstein and got a room with no problem but not in the new KMCC lodge. We spent 4 nights there and took some tours with the RTT office before catching a train from Landstuhl to Amsterdam for 2 weeks, Also did a train to Paris, and from Amsterdam to Heidelberg Germany before returning to Landstuhl to get the 10 euro taxi back to the terminal. This time we find out that they have done away with the waiting list for billetting. It is first come first serve for any unclamined rooms starting at 6pm. Again we got a room but for only 1 night across from the library on base. We heard there would be no rooms available for the next several days at all. We headed back to the terminal at 8am for a scheduled DC10 flight to BWI. Had a 58 day sign up so I was getting a little nervouse but we made in on because of it. A few were left behind... arrived in BWI, tired, got a room at the local Hampton Inn and called Wynn Shuttle service the next AM and he picked us up at 11am and had us back to Dover for the ride home. Cost was $170... but we could not find any one else needing to get to Dover to share with unfortunately. But was cheaper than a one way rental car with Hertz... The eurail pass was a great way to travel. We had the couples pass for 3 countries, 5 travel days in 2 months. Had to pay extra for a mandatory seat reservation to and from Paris which was a rip off I think.,.. Another $200 plus for that. the trip was great. We flew back with a lot of troupes returing from Iraq to a heroes welcome at BWI which was very emotional. Lesson here,, is.. if you are not in the terminal... you may loose out... |
