Paul wrote in the ether: "There is plane that goes and returns once a month to Travis for their reserve weekend." I believe that is news. And good news. |

I flew back from Davis Monthan on Saturday. All 11 passengers that flew out of Pittsburgh returned. The PA Air Guard is listed on John D's Space A page. Signed up on Take a Hop .com for the return flight but the passenger terminal had no record so I filled out a new form. I was able to get a rental vehicle on my second day. I went to Sabino canyon and the Biosphere 2. Davis Monthan has nice facilities, (BX, Commissary, Gym & Loding). Tucson has a large Jewish community and a kosher restauant if that is a requirement for some space a travelers. There was a German C-160 aircraft on the runway as well another Guard plane but the pax terminal didnt show any other flights. There is plane that goes and returns once a month to Travis for their reserve weekend. Have a great day! Happy travels!! |

The Air Museum Ed describes is Falcon Field on the East side of Mesa, nr. intersection of McKellips & Higley Rd. In WWII, it was the site of a RAF flight training facility, not much is left of that era. Beside the museum, the airfield is the home of the AZ Wing of the Confederate Air Force. |

I wanted to take that trip, but the hubby had to work. We lived there for a few years. Some of our favorite things: I agree with Mike: Driving up Mt. Lemmon to Summerhaven is a must do. We also liked visiting the San Xavier Mission just south of Tucson. Hitting Nogales for furniture and other cool stuff. Hiking in the desert (Saguaro Nat Park) If you decide to head out to Organ Pipe Nat. Monument, there is a neat little Tohono O'Odham Indian store on the right hand side along 86. (I was a teacher out on that Reservation.) We also used to cross the border to Puerto Penasco and camp on the beach (not sure about your rental car rules, though.) There was a guy who would sell Tamales out of a bucket in the AM on the beach- so Tamales for breakfast! Have FUN! Inga |

Based on research: 1. There are occasional flights out of N.I. to Yuma MCAS & Phoenix. (per N.I. Jan '10 flt postings, 2-Yuma & 1-Phoenix.) 2. Per Jun 29, '09 post (by Danny Hamilton): "if you can score an AF flight to March ARB, March flies a C-17 to Williams Gateway Airport (SE Phoenix area) on Reserve Weekends. Those flights are called the "Cactus Run". The plane leaves March ARB on Fridays virtually empty and it is easy to catch a hop to Williams. They do the Cactus Run on Sundays to return the Reservists, but the Space-A seats may be limited on those Sunday flights." Based on a call I just made to the March recording, there were several flts to Wms Gateway near Phoenix. In John D's Space-a Pages (above)... the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport ph # Pax recording (623-792-7378) it informs about "what sounds" like a "Cactus run". [ More research needed....but this sounds like a semi-predictable SPAT route to Phoenix ... ADW to TRAV to March to Wms Gateway. ]. 3. searching "Yuma"...."Phoenix" and "cactus" 4. My Worldwide Space-A Travel Handbook lists under reserve flights: March-Nellis-Phoenix-March 2x/mo. 5. Will start a new string, versus hijacking this one. ...back with more later..."tee time in an hour". |

FHYL, I'm also looking to do the same thing. I'm trying get from Mildenhall to Phoenix. I think my best bet will be to get to North Island and drive 6 hrs or from Yuma if there are flights there. Any other suggestions? |

Would you please provide more info on how you SPATed into and out of Davis Monthan? From base? PAX terminal phone (if flt sched is not posted on Pepperd.com)? etc. I'm looking to go to Phoenix from Andrews AFB (or where ever flies) into Pheonix, AZ next Oct and am currently looking to SPAT in as close as I can, Luke AFB, Davis Monthan, N.I. San Diego, etc. I've done several searches but have found little. THX in Adv. |

Recommend that you head south to Bisbee (about an hour drive)-a former copper mining town that is now more for the arts and shopping. Don't miss the opportunity to take the copper mine tour-usually given by retirees who actually worked the mine. |

We stayed at Davis Monthan last winter. Took a great ranger-lead hike at the Saguaro National Park just north of D-M. Also, the Titan Missile Museum in Green Valley south of Tucson was excellent. |

Thanks for the suggestions. Currently Enterprise is out of cars. They know how to take reservations. They just domt know how to hold the reservation, and that's the most important part of the reservation according to Jerry Seinfeld. Rebecca, it was very hot on the KC135. |

I used to enjoy just heading out into the desert. I'm not sure there is any desert left now, except underneath all the development. Leland University of Arizona '69 |

Paul: Lucky devil! You are in one of few parts of the country currently enjoying warm weather! Although I spent my youth in Pittsburgh (South Hills), I went to college at the U of A. Consequently, I'm quite familiar with the area. I don't know how much time you'll be spending there, but some must-see local points of interest include: Sabino Canyon, Biosphere 2, The Sonora Dessert Museum/Park, Old Tucson, Tombstone and, my favorite, Mt. Lemmon. Also, the Mexican border town of Nogales is less than an hour south if you're so inclined. If you can rent a GPS from the BX or the car rental agency, it'd make getting around much easier. What we do is to go on Google Earth, get the coordinates of places we want to visit, enter them into the GPS and GO! Sure wish that I were in Tucson now! |

Flew on a KC 135 today from Pittsburgh to Tuscon. 40 seats offered- 11 space a pax. 3 1/2 hour trip. Pgh was freezing cold and I walked to the food court at the Davis Monthan BX in a pair of shorts and a polo shirt. Here for 6 days. Billeting available for entire trip. They have an Enterprise at the BX so I plan on renting a car and going to the museum for retired aircraft and enjoy the sunshine. Any suggestions from other spat's who have traveled here. Thanks, Paul |
