Not sure what you mean about inquiring and getting a negative reply. We took the space-a bus from Heathrow to the Air Force Inn stop at Mildenhall, then a taxi from there to Bury St. Edmunds. Did not realize it was that far or what the cost would be; did not ask about the fare before we took the ride. That was our mistake; the ride was metered, so we didn't get ripped off. After we dropped the rental car off, National car rental called a car service to take us to the Bury St. Edmunds bus station for £3.5; driver said his non-metered company would have charged about £18 for the ride. We went with the National car rental because I couldn't get a straight answer on insurance and mileage issues from the local rental company in Bird-in-Hand. |

Informative. On the taxi shuttle to Milldenhall, did you inquire and got a Negative reply? or was no offer made? From the rental car drop, a 13 mile taxi ride for £27 (US$42.23). I guess that's about like my '05 hack fare, a 25.1 mile shared ride from Milldenhall to Stanstead for US$60 each (x3). |

Mary: We did an exchange to a MacDonald resort in Carr-bridge, between Aviemore and Inverness. Nice place. |

We made the mistake of renting from National (Europcar) in Bury St. Edmunds, which turned out to be a £27 taxi ride from Mildenhall. So, before we returned the car at 1300 Monday, we toured Ely and the Ely Cathedral (fascinating, with a great tour; well worth the fee). After returning the car, we took a taxi from the car rental office (you would think that, after spending $300+ the could have offered a ride) to the bus station (£3.50) and the bus to Mildenhall (£3.60 for seniors). Everything on Mildenhall is within walking distance; the pax terminal was about 1/2 mile. If we had not gotten a flight out, we were planning to check bus schedules to Cambridge to spend a day there. |

Jerry, how did you get around after you turned the car in? What rental company did you use and where did you drop it? |

After three weeks on the road (Queen Mary 2 transatlantic crossing and a time share in Scotland), arrived at Mildenhall Sunday evening (24 Jan) hoping to head to the US East Coast. Only two flights posted for Monday (Souda Bay and McConnell), both too early since we had to return a car rental Monday morning. By Monday, one flght was scheduled to Fairchild. Getting desperate, we checked Kayak.com for commercial, heading for Plan B. Went to dinner and then a USO show (Neal McCoy, with the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders!) and back to quarters about 2130. Checked the flight schedule recording and — there is a Space-A god ... flight to McGuire with an 0355 show time. Called out to my better half, "pack your bags!" Got packed and caught about three hours' sleep. Departure was about 0630 and the crew chief said it would be about 5 1/2 hours. Read, slept, etc. After about 5 1/2 hours, landed (after one go-around) and got off the C-17 to a sign welcoming us to ... Gander! They didn't have enough fuel for McGuire. Eventually made it to McGuire, with my bride and I in the cockpit for landing. She was only slightly unnerved with two go-rounds here because of wind shear before we made it on the third try. Great trip overall. Mildenhall staff and C-17 crew thoroughly professional, pleasant, accommodating and helpful. |
