Please take the Ag inspection discussion offline (or to a new Off Topic Thread). Thanks!

Folks, I really do understand and support the ag control system but it is not being done well. The apples I declared and gave up were bought in the commissary and came from WA and were the same ones in the flt lunch I bought and eat on the aircraft. Meanwhile the pinapples were allowed out. go figure.

Lea,
California doesn't want bugs either....nor does Florida and any other AG economy. AG inspection agencies do coordinate and co-operate w/ each other. Just like the CDC.

Bugs and pests now travel at the speed of a C-17, KC-10, C-130, 777, 747, etc.

And there are travelers everywhere who (knowingly or unknowingly) bring in unwanted bugs and pests.

Japanese beetles, fruit flies, snakes, mongeese, aligators, fire ants, kudzu, hydrilla, raw meat products, (what was that banned candy?) and other pests that are now turning some eco-systems up-side down, and not just Hawaii.

Why just questions asked and fill out forms? Because the idea is that travelers are basically honest. Not smart sometimes, but honest. Can you imagine a 100% bag check for all flights, like the body scanning and no liquids >3 oz. to minimize "terror threats"?

PS: Besides having an uncle who was an AG inspector, I've lived in CA & HI and have kids who reside in FL.

... back to FL to HI. (no need to be a hi-jacking "person of interest").

Don we have been here in Fl for 13 years and this is the worst. We have been cold, relative, since Dec. We have been in the 20's but are now lows around 30's and not out of the 60's for high. For us Floidians thats cold.

The old "I called but they said No" trick. You can just hope that one day, the pax rep will be retired, and the "do unto others" will kick in.

Roger, the part that makes me wonder about the trip was "Complained about our cold weather and suggested we go somewhere warm" Your profile said you are in Fla.....All the time I have been told to go to Fla, it is warmer there. What am I missing?

I agree with all but the point was the Pax rep could have gotten permission for them to go on the flight before the Ag inspection. He said he called ops but the aircraft commander said he never was asked to up the seat count until I asked him later.

The guy up at K Bay was nice. He just asked easch of us if we had anything, he might have looked in a few bags, but not many. We had got a subway sandwhich for the flight, I asked at the terminal if that would be allowed and they said yes, since the figure you will be eating it while in the air. He didn't say anything about it.

I don't know if it is always the same ones, but the ag inspector when we left this past January was a great big JERK. A self-aggrandized JERK.

I understand inspections coming in to protect Hawaiian agriculture from foreign pests. But what is the rationale for checking folks on the way out? Is there a pineapple smuggling cartel?

Wm,

Be advised, when an Agriculture Officer asks you, during a baggage inspection, if you are transporting any restricted articles, and you answer falsely, you could step into deep "poop".

I suggest you read the Ag declaration form and the penalty warnings.

Protecting the islands agriculture is no joke and no fraud.

Personally, I'd like to meet someone who has been caught, convicted, fined and jailed for screwing up my home.

I flew out of Hickam in Sept. and They had the Ag inspector show up early AM and go through most of the pax for morning flights. It appears that this is a real problem as the flt I was on said they could take more pax but we could not arrange it. I suspect do to the Ag inspection which is a giant fraud anyway. Inspector mearly asked if you have certian fruit with you.

Roger:

Great report! Thanks for taking the time to write it up and share it with us. Thanks also for the extra effort to help the other pax...too bad it didn't work out.

Happy travels, John

Feb 14 - The usual Valentines day, took the wife to dinner and the card presented. Complained about our cold weather and suggested we go somewhere warm. She said she wanted to stay home but if I wanted to go it was ok. Got home and called MacDill recording to find a next day 0630 show time for Hickam.

Fer 15 showed with a 1/4/10 sighup date. They had 10 seats, KC135, and behold 10 showed up. Long flight, 11 hours non stop, bad headwinds. Landed and walked to lodging. Called from MacDill but the usual no room. When there begged for room and got one for 3 nights with shared bath.

Feb 16- 24 Enjoyed the usual sights using car and bus. Had to compete everyday after the original 3 days for room but they always came up with one. Had good time with Mike Spengel and his wife, met on this board, who live in Hi.

Flight was originaly going back to MacDill on 21st after refueling missions on Wake but broke and could not get parts. Each day the flight was listed at Hickam on the board only to be dropped.

Feb 24 Flight is a go and I had a signup of 1/4/10 for Hickam as well. Good thing as myself and another couple, Tony and Ann, that I met on the way down showed along with 2 famlies of 3 active duty on leaveand 3 other cat VI. When done the couple could only get one seat so declined as they had recent signup.

After the roll call I went to the Pax rep and asked him to call ops and ask the aircraft commander if he could release 2 more seats for the other couple. He said he did and could not get permission. When we boarded I asked the commander why we could not take the couple that came down with us and he replied we can. He said pax rep never contacted him. We called back to Pax rep and he said no would not process the couple to jion the flight as the agriculture would not come back to process them. I was not happy but tried my best to get them on. I guess the signup is very important if you want to compete for seats.

All in all great time, had to come home when flight was ready as wife said she would buy a dog to keep her company if I stayed too long.
