Jane Speal's questions were moved to the General Forum to a thread titled "CONUS to Germany."

Anne: We were at Charleston for a day and a half catching a flight to the west coast and we observed the same thing you encountered. Charleson has more cancel flights or flights which do not take PAXs than any terminal I know of. The flights listed on their flight schedule and the flights which actually take PAXs are under 50%. In our case there was a flight listed for March ARB, the place was at the Charleston airport but could/would not take PAXs because it was on the civilian side of the airport. There needs to be more inter office communication between the terminal and the operation folks. Happy Travels.

Anne - sounds like the same old story as far a trying to get out of Charleston. If you get out of there, you are lucky.

Anne:

Sorry you didn't make it out. Thank you, however, for taking the time to write up your adventure and to share it with us. It is a gentle reminder that in the Spacea world, nothing is certain! You did everything right (especially the "perfect time of year") and yet were unable to fly. Best wishes on your next attempt.

Happy Travels, John

Here's my first trip report flying space-a. On Friday, Feb 19th, armed with my passport, ID, commander's letter, and my cat IV status, I headed over to Charleston AFB hopeful to get on one of the three flights listed to Ramstein. I had been told that there were usually lots of flights and that I was travelling at a good time of year so I was pretty hopeful about getting on something. I checked in with the pleasant and helpful staff at the counter and settled into a chair trying not to be too excited. All the flights evaporated and I headed back home thinking I could make it out over the weekend. Saturday, Sunday, and Monday were all repeats of my experience on Friday. Flights appeared and evaporated. I had decided that I would bag the trip if I didn't get anything by Tuesday, Feb 23 as I was burning through my vacation time. Tuesday proved to be a repeat of the previous days. Just as I was packing up to go home for good, a flight appeared so I decided to wait. Lo and behold it came in around 2300 with 70 seats. My name was called along with all the other waiting travellers. I had just finished checking my bag and had my money out to pay for a meal when the word came that no passengers would be taken. There were a number of families ahead of me with lots of kids (very well behaved!) whose hearts must have sunk more than mine. I hung around the terminal until noon on Wednesday. Nothing appeared to be changing with flights - most of them disappearing - so I finally gave up.

Although I never made it out on a flight, I met a lot of interesting people both travellers and staff. I definitely will try this again when I have more time to spend. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for all the other passengers that were there since Friday. Hope they're all on their way to Germany.
