We did make it out of Seattle. Not on Wednesday's flight, though. They didn't get past Cat III on that roll call so I bought an early Thursday morning ticket to Boise and invaded my inlaws for a couple of days. We flew back to Seattle in time for the Saturday night roll call. We were a Cat IV again, ended up being 22 on the list and they released over 40 seats. We got manifested to Yokota with no problems, though the car seat caused some confusion with seat assignments. A stop in Alaska, another in Misawa, and we were home.

Not without surprises, but we've done this a few times now and remained flexible and patient. Met some great people along the way and learned a lot, as always. :-) ~Sara

Jack, Sara is a pro. She doesn't need to be warned about the perils of space-a travel with kids. She originated from Atsugi, went to Kadena where we met. Of course you know the rest of the story.

Thanks for your concern.

Edgar: Thanks for not warning her about the perils of flight with young children.

Well, we made it out of Kadena on Edgar's same flight to K-Bay, with the Marine unit returning and were grateful for the ride on their final leg home.

When we made it to Hickam, all the flights that had been showing for Friday had evaporated so we got a room at the Hickam Lodge (by luck, apparently, they seemed to be pretty full everywhere that weekend) for the night and kept calling for updates. A few flights headed back East but commercial tickets to our final destination (TX) were actually cheaper just flying direct from Honolulu. That was what we decided to to, until a Sunday EAM roll call to Tinker showed on the boards.

We bought fully refundable tickets from Honolulu to Houston, leaving Sunday night, giving us the chance to roll the dice on the Tinker flight. The roll call was set for 0540 and with no room at the Inn, we decided to stay the night at the terminal in the family room. The babies slept and we got the chance to shower and repack our bags. The roll call got bumped up to 0340, so it's a good thing we were just hanging out waiting. They manifested everyone who wanted to go (12 pax) and after a slight mechanical delay, we were on our way to OK. We landed at 6pm local time and had a ride arranged to pick us up and take us to a car rental location near the OKC airport. By 10pm, we were on the road to Houston. My husband had helped us out by waiting a few hours into our flight time to cancel our commercial tickets and reserve our rental car. Commercial tix from Honolulu would have been $475/each and the one way rental with gas ran us just shy of $300, which came out to $150 each.

We are not traveling back to Japan together, my daughter and I are going to try for the PE out of Seattle this week, hoping to avoid the spring break rush from the states to Japan. *crossing fingers* Our journey to the states took 5 days, but the flights were broken up and the kids did awesome. Hoping for a similarly smooth trip back! ~Sara

Nope Edgar, we are still here. Waiting on the PatEx today, but it's not looking good at all. Terminal is full, tons of kids. Lots of flights headed out our way this weekend, so we are cautiously optimistic. Good luck to you, hope we all manage to get off this island soon!

Hi Sara, were you selected for the Hickam flight? There are many mothers with babies trying to fly at this time. Hmmm, it will be difficult competing for seats with you guys.

My friend and I are trying to use our EML letters unaccompanied to take our babies to see the grandparent's stateside.

Plan A was Yokota to Travis, via Elmendorf and then commercial from Travis. Plan B was the Patriot Express, then commercial from Seattle; and Plan C was island hopping: mainland to Kadena, Andersen, Hickam, etc. until we could get to Conus, then commercial from there.

Flights out of Yokota are far and few between this week. Saturday and Sunday flights to Travis evaporated and a Wednesday night flight to Hickam out of Atsugi also fell through. We got to Yokota early on Wednesday for an 1120 roll call for a 1210 flight to Kadena. It left Okinawa late and arrived late. It was a medevac with a fast turn around, we were in the air at 1450. Uneventful flight, kids did good, stayed in their car seats the whole flight and even slept a bit. We had a really rough landing, but were on a bus headed to the terminal by 1830. Checked with the desk for today's flights and then called a cab and got lodging. We are back at Kadena's air terminal today trying to catch a flight to Hickam, so only time will tell. The important thing for us is that we got off the mainland and are actively trying to grab a flight headed East towards Conus. ~Sara
