thanks everyone... i am (por fin) in travis after 2days waiting in rota!! the flights were plentiful when i first arrived at the rota terminal BUT each flight eventually broke, was rescheduled or plain disappeared from the manifest. i was - as were many other people in rota - actually checked in and luggage checked in also, on more than three flights BUT after the problems, had to get my luggage. though i longed to experience the Gander route, it was not to ne. i was checked in on that flight on 22 june and it disappeared after being pushed back three times, and i saw it reappear on the schedule for 25 june. thanks everyone for your replies - i will get thar eventually. i happened to luck out earlier today and got on a direct flight to travis from rota.

i am checking around for info on Gander as the plane i hope to catch tomorrow night in Rota goes to refuel here enroute Travis also. what kind comments!!! 17hrs at charleston? i wish i had that "long" a wait a month ago!! i was stuck in charleston for 3 days!! but it's a nice terminal and things are within walking distance, including the galley/dining fac which allows retirees to dine there.

Gander sounds like a great place to get "stucK" and i'd finally see (something) of Canada!!!!

Don't know if you are aware, but Gander was a huge component following 911. Dozens of aircraft had to diverted to Gander when all aircraft were grounded. The whole community opened up their churches, businesses and gyms to help out. Even bus drivers on strike came back to work to transport passengers.

People were "stuck" in Gander for several days before the aircraft were allowed to leave. Since their luggage was unavailable (checked baggage), many stores allowed passengers free clothing and toiletries.

So I would say Gander would be a GREAT place to visit. Maybe when I fly out/in to Charleston this fall I will spend a few minutes.

Edwin.. I'm sympathetic to your plight. We just spent 11 hrs sitting at the terminal in Charleston waiting to continue on with our C17 to McChord.

They explained to us at Gander that mixing us PAX customers with regular commercial passengers is a problem. It must be a Customs or Immigration issue. They did go to get lengths to help us get food & make sure we were comfortable. We really appreciated their kindness.

Cindy: You were fortunate: a while back we stopped at Gander for a scheduled RON; caught a ride to the hotel with the air crew for the night. Next morning to continue our trip to Norfolk only 3 engines on our C141 would start; we deplaned & made our way back to the terminal where we had to stay in the checkin area & not go into the restaurant for some 8 hrs until a C17 showed up & we were allowed to continue our journey. Long wait.

Cindy: We landed at Gander and received great treatment, only we also got to stay the night. The staff at the terminal did everything they could to make us feel welcome and to spend our money. The contract hotel was alright but not for the price of $107.00. We were there in early Feb and it was quite cold but I took a walk anyway and the people was very friendly.

Our C17 stopped at Gander Newfoundland just for refueling, but we had a fun hour on Canadian soil.

The almost 7 hr flt from Ramstein to Gander left all 14 of us PAX ready to stretch, & if possible, eat. We were gear down at 1700 (Ramstein time) & landed in light snow & 32 deg. The cold air took our breath away, but that didn’t stop anyone from walking from the plane into the terminal.

The huge terminal was beautiful. Spacious and very user-friendly. The entire Canadian staff went out of their way to help us. Customs opened up to process our passports so we could go into the restaurant for food; the Immigration agent unlocked doors and made sure we could get to the restaurant; the lady who worked in the fabulous airport store opened up so we could shop. They had some amazing winter clothes, travel items, souvenirs, and snacks. Duty free.

It was the fastest hour on the ground I’ve ever spent. As we departed, another Immigration agent gave us all a Gander lapel pin. What a nice introduction to Newfoundland. Hope you get to visit someday.
Cindy
