I had a similar experience: easy hop from McChord to N. Island; met my brother; went to Mexico and built a house in Ensenada for YUGO/Ensenada Outreach Center. On the way back, there was nothing to McChord, but there were several flights to Whibey NAS (which I should have taken, next time Whidbey -> N. Is. -> Whidbey). Anyway, I rode with my brother to San Jose, CA and waited for a hop from Travis to McChord. What a tease, three flights came up through the week but were cancelled as I called an hour before show time. Don't know if they were really cancelled or not. The Travis Flight Desk didn't seem very forthcoming. I was looking at a hop from Travis to Elmendorf to McChord when my brother-in-law hooked me up with a family pass on United. Glad my wife claimed me at SEATAC at 0100 and drove me to McChord the next day to pick up my car. There used to be a lot more Space-A from Travis to McChord a few years ago. Sometimes Space-A gives opportunity for family time. |

Edgar, I'm really glad we missed out on those aftershocks! I did try for flights from the other bases but nothing was going our way. On Monday there was a flight from N. Island to Hawaii and then back to McChord but it got canceled. We would've taken that one had it gone just for the adventure. We checked Greyhound, Amtrak, renting a car, etc. The Southwest flight cost just a tiny bit more and got us home in 4 hours. I have to agree with you that space-A is wonderful! Now that we got our feet wet we will definitely try it again! |

Joan, just to let you know, we've had hundreds of after shocks since the initial one last Easter. BTW, did you try Miramar or March ARB for a flight to Travis? Just checking. or did you consider heading further to Hawaii, then back-track? Isn't space-a wonderful? |

Wow! Somebody who actually reads the board, does some research, and then posts. I'm impressed. Thanks for posting. |

My husband and I have been reading this board for three years just soaking up so much great information. However, we've been chicken to make that initial attempt to fly space-A. On Good Friday evening, I just happened to check the flight schedule for McChord and saw a flight to North Island Saturday morning at 4:25am. We flew into a frenzy of activity and left home at midnight to drive to McChord. The were 45 seats available and only about 22 takers. We met really nice people in the terminal and I was totally excited to get the boarding pass with the attached receipt for $0.00! I was in awe at the size of the C17. We had a lovely smooth 2 hour flight. So we spent the weekend with my nephew in his beach condo (third floor). Everything was great. Then Sunday afternoon I sat down with my netbook to look for a flight home when the whole building grumbled, groaned and shook. I was absolutely frozen in my chair.....an earthquake! People were screaming, "Get out of the buildings!" We ran down 2 flights of stairs thinking they might collapse and made it outside. We sat outside for a few hours and eventually went back inside. Fortunately we didn't feel any aftershocks but I did sleep with my clothes on that night!! Once things settled down, I searched for a flight home only to find there were no flights to WA all week. We were certainly aware that this could happen so we purchased one way tickets on Southwest for $267 each and had no problems getting home. We had an awesome adventure and I wouldn't change anything about it. As it turns out, we actually ended up paying what would've been 2 roundtrip tickets but we had the priceless space-A experience. Thanks to all the folks on this board who so willingly help people. We can't wait to try it again! |
