We got our Rental on line, Didn't Know the would pick you up at Dover. Would have saved us $15 cab ride. Thanks
At Moron we rented from the gas station on base and turned it in at Rota PAX. No problems it was 174 Euros for a week, unlimited milage and two drivers. |

Bill, great trip report. Would Hertz not pick you up from Dover? We rented from them last month and they picked us up from lodging at Dover. We also drove from Dover to Charleston. |

We were one of the couples from Rota to Dover with you, the ones from Florida. We also rented a car from Dover Hertz and drove home after Charleston flights kept getting cancelled. The other couple stayed, not sure what they wound up doing. Glad we're not trying to back from Europe now! |

Bill & TOM’S SPACE-A TRIP TO SPAIN 2010:
Monday and Tuesday, April 19 & 20
Tom McMillan and I decided to take a SpaceA trip to Germany. There was a scheduled flight out of Charleston to Ramstein on Monday with roll call at 0430. We called at 0300 and it had moved to 0600. We got to PAX (passenger terminal) at 0530 and checked in. They said the volcano in Iceland was probably going to prevent that flight. At 0800 they said it had been cancelled, but they had a flight going to Rota, Spain with roll call at 1500. We agreed to try it and went to eat breakfast, ride over to McLellandville, and get lunch and a Rick Steves book on Spain. We got back and the Rota flight was cancelled. The next flight was to Moro’n, Spain (RC 1900). We made the list and went to the C-17 three times before it took off. We finally got out of Charleston on Tuesday morning at 0200 hours on our way to MORON’, SPAIN.
It was a C17, a great flight, with only 15 passengers, so we had plenty of room to spread out. They were caring 40 pallets of small arms ammo somewhere but we landed in Moron about 5 PM local time. We went to an ATM and got some Euros and then to Base Housing. They were full but got us a room at the Grand Hotel Moron near the town of Moro’n and called a cab for us. We got a suitable room for 64 Euros and it included 2 hrs of internet and breakfast. We ordered a Pizza and the man at hotel helped us order tickets for bull fight on Thursday in Seville. Tomorrow we are going back to Base and try to get a rental car. Skype phone is great. I called home every night for 2 cents a minute.
Wednesday, April 21
Picked up rental car at 8:00 and drove back to pick up luggage. First stop was at the Police station where we registered our passports and got stamped. This is a law that you have to get if you stay in Spain 48 hours. We left and drove to Rhonda, about 100 Km away. This is a great old city on the top of two mountains (big ravine between the two parts of the city with a connecting bridge). We had lunch (tapas) at the train station and then took a walking tour of the city. We took a tour of the bullring, it is the first bullring built in the world and is still functioning. It has a great museum of bull fighting and a lot of Goya’s paintings and drawings.
We left Rhonda and drove to Seville. Found an Ibis Hotel (129 Euros due to the Festival going on) and elected to stay two nights in order to see the sights. We ate a steak at the hotel, because we were tired. The steaks were good. The room was big and comfortable.
Thursday, April 22
Toured Seville by Tour bus from 10:00 to 3:00, then back to Hotel for rest. Took bus again to downtown and walked around. Picked up bull fight tickets and got to our seats about 20 minutes early. Saw six bullfights. Matadors 6, Toros 0 was the final score. It was a wonderful powerful, ornate, entertaining, and gory event. Tom and I both enjoyed it. We took a lot of photos. After that we went to dinner and had a great sirloin steak with all the trimmings…we do not think it was the bull. Because of the Festival, a lot of people, both young and old, were wearing the old festival dresses (men were in suits and ties).
Friday, APRIL 23
Drove over and into Portugal and up the coast to Lisbon. Thank goodness for my GPS. It works great over here. Checked into Holiday Inn for two nights (15000 points for a 4 star hotel). Took Metro downtown and walked around. Lots of people hanging out. Found a nice restaurant Ja Disse Restaurante with live soloist and had a good meal. Tom had Cod and I had salmon (60 Euro). Got a CD of the Man who was singing. Took Metro back to hotel. We got back in room at Midnight.
Saturday, April 24
Walked to the bull ring to catch the Grey Line Tour Bus and rode it all the way around Lisbon, then took the boat tour of the harbor (2 ½ hrs). Both were interesting and worth the 33 Euro fare. Ate pizza in the square before the boat tour. At night we went to another café in the Barrio Alto district that also had Faro music live (Dega Mesquita-Fado). Here another man and woman sang accompanied by guitar and a pregnant mandolin. It was better than the previous night. Food was OK. Got back to room about midnight.
Sunday, April 25
Left Lisbon and drove the back roads back to Spain. Drove to Jerez de la Frontera. Checked into an Ibis (60 Euro), then went in search of food. Had a great meal of croquettes, seafood salad, Ox steak, bread, and veggies (28 Euros).
Monday, April 26
Went to Spain’s answer to Wal-Mart and purchased two sleeping mattresses, a cooler, and some other trinkets. After getting gas, we headed over to Rota to check out the Air Base. We got there and found out that we could leave our car there, after all, and checked on flights. There was one going to Charleston, but after 2 hours, it got cancelled. Then, they told us we could get on one to Dover. We got on this flight after we found out there were two flights to Charleston tomorrow from Dover. So, we got on a C5A (Old Model) and since there were only nine passengers and 73 seats, we all spread out so we could sleep. We took off at 6:15 local time (about noon SC time) for a ten hour flight. So far, so good! It was a good flight and we met two couples who had been on transatlantic cruses to Europe and were taking SpaceA home. They had reservations at Dover Air Base. We did not. But after calling them and suggesting that I might call the protocol officer, they found us a Suite. It was very nice ($48).
The next scheduled flight to Charleston was the following night, so we checked with Hertz about a one way rental. We got one for $124 for the next morning at 8:00.
Tuesday, April 27
George’s Taxi took us there for $21 and we got a nice Toyota and drove to Charleston. I got to Edisto at 10 PM and Tom got home in Columbia about the same time. A good time was had by all. |

Gremany was our first choice, then England, but settled for Spain and had a great trip. See attachment for our trip report
