Thank you for the information! Since I am going to be flying as a category V I think it is going to be hard and I might not make the trip after all. I would love to hop from base to base but am unable to since I am only allowed 1 roundtrip. I think I may just wait until my husband is able to come with me.

Melissa, flights from Milwaukee are flown by an ANG wing. There is no regularity for flights to Hickam. Jery Gonya and Bob radar do an excellent job of posting scheduled flights.

The people at the wing are great. We had planned on going to Hickam with them earlier this year. They called to advise 24 hours in advance that the flight had been scrubbed and offered an alternarive.

My best advice is not to count on flight to Hickam when you need it.

Pat-

May I ask if you took a flight on a KC-135? How hard was it getting a flight out of Milwaukee?? I am planning on traveling Space-A for the first time with my 2 children from Hickam to Milwaukee and then returning to Hickam about a month later and just want to get a feel for how many people they take on the flights. I'm sure it's different every time though. Any questions you can answer would be great!

Pat:

Thanks, BTW a KC-135 is a militarized version of the Boeing 707 (only four airlines (none US) are still flying the 707 in the world today!).

Pat:

Great report. Thanks for taking the time and effort to write it up and to share it with us. What aircraft did you fly on?

Happy Travels, John

Great trip report. I am glad you made it this time! We all live and learn. Space A is always a gamble, but with some planning and luck you can enjoy and have a great trip.

Left Milwaukee on Sunday 9th and returned on Saturday May 15th. It was a wonderful trip; with flights nonstop both ways.

Baked cookies and brownies and brought along little cheese and sausages sticks from Old World Wisconsin for both the station and the flight. It was a huge hit and greatly appreciated, plus it kept me very busy until that phone rang on Friday afternoon. It was bake or clean or pack so I baked!

Here is a little synopsis.

Left Milwaukee early Sunday and arrived at Hickam late afternoon. Weather was perfect. We booked at the Hale Koa as this was our first time out and did not want to be looking for accommodations etc. The room rate was $140. We were on the 10th floor with a great view of the ocean and adult pool, atrium etc. It was categorized at a partial ocean view but we had no trouble at all seeing Waikiki beach or the ocean.

Monday kitty corner from the Hale Koa is a bus stop so we hopped on bus 22 and headed for the Arizona memorial about 10:30 a.m. Arrived in about 20 minutes but was too late to see the Arizona so toured the Missouri, took a scenic bus ride around the island and went back to have a great dinner at the Hale Koa. Bus rides both ways were under $6.00. Bring your AARP card as rides are more reasonable than military discount although for some reason the bus drivers were all so nice that they left us on at that rate etc. Could not say enough about the bus drivers. So polite and accommodating.

Tuesday, tired and stayed at the hotel to walk beach and just enjoy the ocean and resort. We always ate at the Hale Koa but we are normally only eat twice a day so it worked for us. Food portions were oversized so many times we shared. Prices were actually more reasonable than we expected.

Wednesday we headed out “EARLY” on the bus to see the Arizona. (About 8:30 a.m.) We made the 12:40 p.m. ferry (free tickets are given to you) for the Arizona. Spent the waiting time looking at all the submarine memorial etc. Time flew and soon we were on the Arizona.
This was my first time seeing the Arizona and it was very somber. After we left I felt like we had been at a wake, (same feeling I had at Oklahoma City). Then took a bus (#42) to the Navy Exchange. Wow, what a store. Husband purchased a few Navy souvenirs and decals to put on his truck so he was happy.

Thursday early a.m., we took the submarine ride next door to the Hale Koa. It was nice but seen more in a glass bottom boat in Jamaica. In the afternoon we just relaxed at the pool etc. and then Thursday night went to the Hale Koa luau. It was done very nicely and the food was great. I hate to admit this but I did like the poi. The entertainment was very good and I especially like the closing ceremony. I had never been to a luau so I can’t compare it to anyone else’s.

Friday we spent the day at the pool just relaxing. A unit had come back from Afghanistan and they had a jazz band playing in the atrium. It was a nice touch. Lunch buffet that day was extra special for the returning unit also. Friday night we stayed to the pool until the fireworks were over next door. I forgot the name of the hotel but children were coming over to buy hotdogs etc. at the pool stand as the prices were so high over there.

Saturday, we took a taxi back to the terminal and headed home. All in the entire trip was perfect. Landed in Milwaukee. Personnel were great at the air station even taking the luggage to the parking lot for us. We could not have asked for better service or professionalism.

This was a second Space A attempt. Our first we ended up with 10,313 miles per Google and did not get to Hawaii. We went from Scott, to McCord, to Miramar to Travis to try to get to Hawaii, return was Travis to NAS Norfolk to Colorado Springs the then Greyhound to St. Louis/Scott to get our vehicle.

That trip was truly a learning curve but it still was an adventure. (Would not have wanted to do it years ago with the kids though.)

Thank you so very much for all the hints etc. It helped us tremendously with the planning etc. Now to learn how to pack lighter!

Next adventure is Alaska and with a few learning trips we would like to go to Portugal to see our AFS daughter Gabi.
