William and John B. -- y'all are bringing back great memories for me seeing and enjoying the Swinging Medallions, The Tams, and many others at the Beach Club and Spanish Galleon in Myrtle Beach as a teenager in the 60's. Thanks.

William: We did enjoy Abbeville, the reason we went to the spring festival was the Swinging Medallions. Our neice's borther-in-law is a member of the group, and the whole family went to the event.

John: Wife and I live in Abbeville, SC.
I hope you enjoyed the spring festival and our small town. If you did not see the Swinging Medalliions, you missed a treat!

Edwin: Didn't know Norfolk was Chambers Field. Would have done that but was unable as it was after business hours, and it was a last minute decision to even take that flight. Your right about the airport fees. Thanks for the number.

John: At Chambers Field AMC terminal there is a Hertz office with cars usually available at least M-F normal working hrs; not sure abt Sat. Think rentals can be arranged after hrs with the keys on site; local fon # is 757 489 1780. Would save the hassle & expense of trying to get to ORF & then having to pay the exorbitant taxes & fees of an airport rental. JMHO!.

We arrived at Shaw to a very warm South Carolina. I had made reservations at Shaw billeting, Carolina Pines (803)895-3080, before leaving Travis. I also made reservations with the on base Enterprise office (803)666-3756 for a week long rental to be dropped off at Charleston AFB (yes, Enterprise does one way rentals in the local area). We visited family in Manning, Sumter, Greenwood, and Greenville, SC. We attended the Spring Festival in Abbeville SC. As I recall, one of the board members lives in Abbeville. A few days later I called Shaw OPs (803)895-2307 to see if they had anything westbound. The airman said they don't do Space A at Shaw. When I informed him that I arrived via Space A, he connected me to a supervisor. The supervisor said they didn't have anything showing. I know it was a long shot but worth trying.

Next we went to Columbia where my wife needed to get some records in the state archives. We spent the night at Fort Jackson (800)276-6984 ($48), older building, but a clean 2 room suite. On the way to Charleston, we stayed at the Carolina Inn in Georgetown (843)546-5191 ($60), very few occupants.

Charleston billeting was full, but we found a coupon book at the terminal with a coupon for the Ramada Inn (800)2RAMADA about 10 miles from the AFB. With the coupon, the room was $59, $100 without the coupon. While in Charleston we ate at Kelly's BBQ, 10475 Hwy 78 East in Summerville. (843)871-3050, Open W-Th-F-Sat 1100 to 2030. Great BBQ!

At Charleston AFB there were flights to Andrews, McGuire, Dover and Norfolk. All either disappeared or took no PAX except for Norfolk. It was an empty C-17 heading to Norfolk to pick up cargo and heading to the sand box. We decided to take it since it was closer to McGuire, our best bet to Travis. The only other 2 PAX to Norfolk were Bill and Eileen Byman of Virginia Beach, VA. They gave us a ride to Norfolk International Airport to pick up a one way Hertz rental that we would turn in at McGuire. Did I mention that you meet the nicest people traveling space A?

We reserved 2 nights at McGuire billeting, (609)754-2035 ($35),but ended up staying at Fort Dix (they handle both). Eight of us Travis bound PAX had dinner together at the McGuire club. We had a great time, many laughs, good company. We met a SPAT at billeting who my wife said looked very familiar. It turns out that he was a former neighbor in California. EB and Jeainne McGowen used to live a block away from us. Unfortunately we never met while they were our neighbors, but we spent time together in New Jersey and hope to visit them at their new home, 2 hours north of us. We had a great time with them and thoroughly enjoyed their company while we waited for our Travis flight.

The Saturday night flight to Travis arrived late due to their having to divert around the volcanic ash. They were required to RON at McGuire. Show time 0800 went smooth. 50 seats and only 22 PAX. The flight was uneventful to Travis. A family of 8 (active duty) had 6 very delightful children who made friends with all the PAX. They were well behaved and made the trip enjoyable. Most of the PAX were heading to Hickam, and we learned later that they all got out on Monday. Travis had 4 C-5's and one must have gotten off the ground!
