There sees to be quite a bit of land available inside the gated section of Bellows. We have stayed there 4 or 5 times and it is remote, quiet and you can walk an uncrowded beach. Most facilities are rustic and a visit there followed or before to Waikiki at the Hale Koa gives you two very different but fun Hawaii's. We have stayed in one of the 4 or 5 newer cabins and it is nothing fancy. Seems as many years as thye have rented these there should be plenty of funds to build new ones. We hope to stay afew days in January at Bellows before two weeks at Waikiki. |

I posted on Tripadvisor about our experience at Bellows. the people there running it were wonderful and the grounds and facilities are great but our cabin was one that I had never seen on their website...it was awful and run down. There were burn marks around the electrical plugs and the lamps themselves looked like the plugs were from the 60's! I hear the renovated cabins are better, wished I had asked for one after we got there. |

Gail- Just remember you won't be spending all that much time actually IN your cabin and the beach is just as perfect whether you are in renovated or not. Aloha! Ken |

Okay I am throwing the dice here..... Bellows had no renovated cabins for any extended time in July. I could get one night on the ocean and the rest of the 2 weeks in my nonrenovated cabin but I felt like it would be going from a castle to a tent! SOOOO I am staying with my nonrenovated cabin and hoping it won't be too bad..... AND I am thankful that somehow I got 2 weeks last Friday when today I could get nothing! Gail |

Kenneth, Thank you so much for the recent viewpoint. In the "big picture" I guess $140 a week would not even get me one NIGHT'S stay in a regular hotel..... I think I am not up to gambling on this one! I sure appreciate your insight! Gail |

Gail- I just got back from my second visit to Hawaii this year and on this trip I spent a couple of days in a non-renovated cabin and a couple of days in a renovated one. Both from this trip and from past experience there is a wide margin of comfort levels in the non-renovated cabins. The one I had this time was not bad. Last year, my wife and I had to ask to be moved because the non-renovated cabin was so bad. The renovated cabins are still relatively like new and so they would seem to be more consistently at a higher comfort level. If you want to roll the dice, stay with your current reservation. For my money, I think the extra $20 would be worth it just for the peace of mind knowing that I would have a good lodging experience. Either way, enjoy paradise! |

Just made reservations for a nonrenovated cabin at Bellows in July. I have read some horrific accounts on these cabins - here and on TripAdvisor. More positive reviews seem to be posted on the renovated cabins. One thing that concerned me was that a poster said that the nonrenovated cabins on the website were not the correct ones.... really they were much more dilapidated. Anyone been there recently to give me the real low down on this? I still could upgrade my reservation at this point. Based on the pictures on the website the renovated ones are not worth $20 more a night to me. Based on people's comments though I am not so sure! Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks, Gail |

More cabins sure are welcomed, but from the photo and my memory it seems that they will all be pretty close together. |

See below article from Honolulu newspaper about 48 new cabins to be built at Bellows Beach. Apparently some resistance from the locals because they say the land should be ceded back to the State. Regardless of the politics though, this is good news at one of the jewels of the Military Recreation system! http://www.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/20090503/NEWS08/905030378 |
