My last stay there was some confusion (likely on my part) getting a room with my daughter. She is now 21 and although we checked in both showing ID, when we got to the room and there was only one bed, I called the front desk to see if we could get a room with two beds, and I think the front desk said there was a problems since daughter was over 21? Is there restrictions on dependends at Gateways? Or was it there was just no two bed rooms available. Nice desk clerks but sometimes hard to understand. After I asked her if she would like to sleep in the same bed with her father, she arranged for a roll away bed!   John C. My favorite is the Amphib Base on Coronado. Both are easy in and out with public transportation. Both are an easy walk around base to the gym, Shoppette, etc. as well as close to get off base. It is overlooked - usually plenty of rooms to choose from. Believe all rooms (four floors) overlook (to south) the entrance to the SD Bay. Good shots of the subs and navy ships departing. Clear day can easily see Mexico. Rooms were excellent - bedroom, bathroom and living room and small balcony. Great condition. Bed had a feather top which reminded me of Grandma's feather bed. Heaven No elevator. Staff was excellent. Out of the way from Downtown, however the solitude was worth it. PT Loma Sub base much better than the roar of departing jets overhead at MCRD. Now I know why Marines don't flinch under fire - if any hearing left, they're accustomed to noise from that tour.   Larry W. I stayed there for a week in January and was quite comfortable. Cost was $23 to $25 a night if you're a YHA member; a couple bucks more for non-members. Includes free pancake breakfast every morning.   Ed K. Both are good bets. In fact, I'll be out there in early July and will look at both again. And, of course, don't forget MCRD San Diego billeting at 619-524-4401. We were able to obtain space at the Point Loma Sub Base for $37/night. The accomodations were very nice, clean, quiet, and a great view of the harbor. There is a nearby NavyEx Shopette just across the parking lot and a 24 hour gas station. There are decent restaurants near-by off base as well- depending on your tastes. I would just add, in addition to hotwire.com, there is hotels.com. We've used them many times with good results. Other advice, if the billeting doesn't work, get off the Coronado Strand and stay away from Downtown. The wife and I spent a very delightful Fourth of July weekend once at a place called the Town and Country Inn. I am NOT going to pay the ridiculous $772.00 for 3 nights at the Doubletree downtown they quoted me. Any suggestions for getting through that 3-day period in San Diego without getting scalped? Thanks.
