I called Charleston lodging on Friday afternoon and was told that space a reservations could only be made 24 hours in advance, and that although lodging was tight, they had 18 rooms available. So, it looks like it depends on who you talk to. Will try again for Monday night if we don't get a flight. |

Re: Bob Dart's comment. I just called CHS Inn and the desk clerk said that the restriction to air crews and other AD personnel would last until August. |

I stayed the night two days ago but I have to qualify it. Charleston Inn is closed to SPATS. Only air crews can obtain a room. When I tried checking in around 2200 I was told "no room in the inn." With more talking I was finally able to get a 3-bedroom TLF at $52 which was cheap if I had to take a round-trip taxi coupled with the cost of a motel. |

Had a bad experience at the LaQuinta near the base. We were dead tired, had somewhat unpacked, I was in the shower and the cold water would not work. The hot water was scalding so had to get dressed, move to another room. On the good side they did not charge us for the night. |

I DON'T recommend the Charleston Days Inn - Airport Coliseum. Nearest Days Inn to the airbase. Terrible! |

We were at the base for 3 days last week trying to get to McChord and the flight kept slipping a day. We stayed at the Marriott Springhill Suites off of Ashley Phosphate Road for 3 nights. It was less than 4 miles from the base. We were very pleased with it. The staff was very friendly and the hotel was really nice. A hot breakfast was included in the price. The price that is quoted on the internet is $79 for military but you might be able to get it a little cheaper because they had very low occupancy while we were there. We paid less than that because our son works for Marriott. We were less than 10 minutes from the base so we had dinner every night at the dining hall. The meal was great. They had a fresh salad bar along with a wide choice of hot dishes. Our meal for the two of us each night was about $6.00 including drinks and dessert. By the way, there is also a Comfort Inn and a Sleep Inn at that exit right near the Springhill Suites. All of these hotels are probably the closest ones to the base. We are regular visitors to the Charleston AFB but just found out about the route to the base going on Ashley Phosphate Road rather than Aviation which is where the highway signs will direct you. It is much closer to the base going on Ashley Phosphate (if you are headed east on I-26) but there are no signs to the base. Your GPS will probably direct you this route. If anyone wants the address and telephone number of the Springhill Suites where we stayed, let me know. Angie |

Just left Charleston and no space A quarters are available for anyone without orders. Everyone is calling to no avail. With the Haiti problem looking like a long term situation, I would not count on quarters for quite a while. Happy Travels. |

According to the base paper, CHS is the major staging point for relief to Haiti...no space-a bookings will be taken at base billeting until 1 Feb (at least)...also, most of the nearby motels (I-26 corridor near the base) are full...the Southeastern Wildlife Expo is Feb. 12-14...this is the biggest single tourist event in the state and will pretty much fill up downtown, Summerville, and Mt. Pleasant...having said this, I personally wouldn't plan on a room of any kind near Charleston AFB for a while...the only meals retirees can't eat at base dining are mid-day meals Mon-Fri. |

All space-a lodging at Charleston AFB has been cancelled until further notice due to need to make room for those needing lodging on way thru here on way to Haiti, I was told by lodging personnel. |

Lodging is normally available except on reserve weekends. Last year, you could eat all meals in the dining hall and the meals were excellent. The dining hall is within walking distance of lodging. Happy Travels. |

Dino, Don't know about the weekend. We were only there on Thursday night which wouldn't normlly have fallen into the "high-demand" period even if it had been a reserve weekend. Vic |

Normally lodging is full on reserve weekends, otherwise there is plenty of quarters available. Reservations can be made by calling the number listed on this site. Some quarters are a way from the main office but within walking distance. The dining hall is within walking distance and the meals are very good. Happy Travels. |

We're spending tonight at the AF Inns onboard Charleston AFB. Typical Visitors Quarters Room - Queen bed - chest of drawers, desk, wireless internet available from our room - private bath - small fridge, coffee maker, microwave and sink. Cost per night $39. Within walking distance (say 1/2 to 3/4 mile) from Air Pax terminal - - and about the same distance the other direction to commissary and exchange. |
