So, it looks like it depends on who you talk to. Charleston Inn is closed to SPATS. Only air crews can obtain a room. When I tried checking in around 2200 I was told "no room in the inn." We were dead tired, had somewhat unpacked, I was in the shower and the cold water would not work. The hot water was scalding so had to get dressed, move to another room. We stayed at the Marriott Springhill Suites off of Ashley Phosphate Road for 3 nights. It was less than 4 miles from the base. We were very pleased with it. The staff was very friendly and the hotel was really nice. A hot breakfast was included in the price. The price that is quoted on the internet is $79 for military but you might be able to get it a little cheaper because they had very low occupancy while we were there. We paid less than that because our son works for Marriott. We were less than 10 minutes from the base so we had dinner every night at the dining hall. The meal was great. They had a fresh salad bar along with a wide choice of hot dishes. Our meal for the two of us each night was about $6.00 including drinks and dessert. By the way, there is also a Comfort Inn and a Sleep Inn at that exit right near the Springhill Suites. All of these hotels are probably the closest ones to the base. We are regular visitors to the Charleston AFB but just found out about the route to the base going on Ashley Phosphate Road rather than Aviation which is where the highway signs will direct you. It is much closer to the base going on Ashley Phosphate (if you are headed east on I-26) but there are no signs to the base. Your GPS will probably direct you this route. If anyone wants the address and telephone number of the Springhill Suites where we stayed, let me know. Everyone is calling to no avail. With the Haiti problem looking like a long term situation, I would not count on quarters for quite a while. Last year, you could eat all meals in the dining hall and the meals were excellent. The dining hall is within walking distance of lodging. Reservations can be made by calling the number listed on this site. Some quarters are a way from the main office but within walking distance. The dining hall is within walking distance and the meals are very good. Typical Visitors Quarters Room - Queen bed - chest of drawers, desk, wireless internet available from our room - private bath - small fridge, coffee maker, microwave and sink. Cost per night $39. Within walking distance (say 1/2 to 3/4 mile) from Air Pax terminal - - and about the same distance the other direction to commissary and exchange.
