We stayed at Mountain Home afb in 2002 and were lodged in a very old, musty building, and I think our room hadn't been used in about a year or two. The rest of the base was good.

Hobart - I too have stayed at Elsworth AFB near Rapid City, SD - kinda out of the way place as well, but I enjoyed the lodging. I have been to Offutt a couple of times, but was unable to secure lodging either time. There is always Camp Ashland National Guard Base right on the Platte River about 25 miles west of Offutt.

The other 2 places I stayed were Offutt AFB Nebraska and Elsworth AFB South Dakota. Both were very good accommodations and I have nothing negative to say about either. I just felt that Mountain Home was just a little better but I would stay at either of the 3 again if given the chance. Stayed at commercial motels also during the trip and none of them compared with the 3 bases. I am appreciative of the perk that allows us retirees to stay at such fine facilities at a more than reasonable cost.

Hobart - Looking at the map, you are right, looks like it's in the middle of no-where, but I've always told myself, if I am ever going north on I-84, I will make it my business to try and stay at Mountain Home AFB. I like the wilderness and out of the way places to visit. I too, like John, would like to know about the other two bases you stayed at, good or bad. There is also a small National Guard Facility at Gowen Field near Boise, ID, I wonder if anyone has stayed there.

Hobart:

Thanks for taking the time to write up your stay at Mountain Home.

You said: "Won't mention the other 2 although they were good..."

Please write up the other two...all info, good, bad or indifferent is helpful for the rest of us who may be traveling that way.

Of course, if you meant that you would be writing them up later in individual threads (just not this thread), then please forgive my intrusion.

Happy travels, John

Just got back from a cross country trip and stayed at 3 different bases going and coming. Won't mention the other 2 although they were good but Mountain Home was outstanding. Getting to the base seemed like we were traveling to no man's land but once you get there the accommodations were exceptional and the staff were extremely friendly. I would highly recommend to anyone who expects to be in the area.
