I emailed this hotel and the following is their response. I followed up with an additional email stating I lived in the midwest and the 2 US clubs were 2400 kilometers away thus membership was not pratical. They responded to email a letter to the director and they may make an exception.

Fred

Is the lodging restricted to commissioned officer personnel?

to make reservations at the St Genevieve, we called them. We are AD and had no problem getting a room. Don't know about retirees. I have heard of retirees that have stayed there. Were they just lucky? It might depend on how much space they have space A when you call.

William K,

Sorry for the confusion but your question wasn't the one I was referring to. Your question was fine )which is why I replied to it with info).

The unrelated post was deleted and I requested the poster to start a new thread in the appropriate forum.

John D--having read previous postings about CNA in the past,we were told that a membership at certain military clubs was required before CNA/St Genevieve would accept a reservation. Sorry, did'nt relize that my question was unrelated to"lodging".

Thanks for the explanation, John. Obviously, I had experimented and found that despite the "notice" the thread WAS accepting follow up new comments.
(BTW, I cannot begin to express how very comforting it is to this non-tekkie "user" that on occasion even you technical wizards can experience unsolvable computer problems!)

Cherry,

Someone had posted a totally unrelated question - when I attempted to move it to its own thread something hiccuped and that message appeared (can't explain it or seem to fix it).

The thread is accepting new responses but no sub-threads (which are not used anyway).

Why does this thread have a "closed" notice above it?

William,

You should be able to request a reservation via their web site or calling them. You can request reservations at both hotlels via the The Cercle National des Armées web site linked from spacea.net's France Travel Lodging Section. The web site also includes their phone numbers.

Hello All,
Stayed at the CNA St. Genevieve recently and thought I'd share our experience.

First off -- Location, location, location!
The hotel is just a block from the hub-bub of the latin quarter, with every dining choice from supermarkets to street food to fine dining within a quick stroll. Those of you who are Rick Steves devotees (as I am) know he's not fond of the Latin Quarter, but I really enjoyed the atmosphere and its energy.

The hotel is a short 5 minute walk to a metro station, easily done with rolling luggage. (The Cardinal Lemione station) A little further walk, through the botanical gardens, to an RER line. (not that you can't take the Metro and transfer)

Just down the hill from the Pantheon. A 20 minute brisk walk from Notre Dame.

Felt completely safe at night in the neighborhood.

The room was bare bones and small (no room for a blanket on the floor for a little one, for example), but at only 75 euro a night, a steal for Paris. There were persistent problems with our room key not working, but hopefully they'll get a new key maker soon.

They offer breakfast, but we didn't eat at the hotel, opting instead for bakery goodies as we walked.

Most reviews on this site are for the CNA's other hotel, the St. Augustine, and from only ducking into its lobby, my guess is that it's far far plusher than the St. Genevieve

They kept our luggage for us on both our inbound and outbound day without a problem. If you go: finding the hotel can be a bit tricky. It doesn't have a sign outside. Once you've found Rue Descartes and you are walking along Rue Descartes (away from the Pantheon). The hotel is the huge brown wood door on your right (just after you've passed the government-looking, gated building). There's a buzzer to buzz you in and at check in they'll give you a key code for the outside door.

If you're of the "sleep cheap" school then St. Genevieve fits the bill --a little worn around the edges, but clean and safe.
