We had no issues walking and although a strange place to us we did not feel that uncomfortable walking. Did this several nights. BTW: During the walks realized the northeast citizens love their halloween decorations.

Other option to see NYC and stay in military lodging is stay at Earle NWS, NJ.

Drive to Little Silver (short drive from NWS) ride train into NYC.

Know talking about Ft Hamilton. But, this may offer other options to someone wanting to see NYC and stay on other military facility to ride train into NYC.

The nearby subway station is the 95th Street station on the R. About 7 blocks from the Fort Ham gate. That neighborhood - Bay Ridge - is probably the safest neighborhood in Brooklyn. I lived there for 15 years until 1996 - walked to Fort Hamilton each weekend and never once encountered any quirks or hassles..

Fred: I agree with you about the convenience of Fort Hamilton to the subway and NYC, but the walk from the base to and from that dirty local subway station left my wife a little unsettled because of the nature of the neighborhood. No problem in the daytime, but didn't you have some concerns about this after returning from NYC late at night?

I made reservatins for my brother/wife, son and myself/wife (3 rooms) 10/23/09-10/26. Great stay, close to subway, made serveral tripts to Times Square. Pricy (77.00)but worth it. Made reservations 30 days out but believe rooms available when we checked in. One of the more pleasurable stays at a military base.

My family and I spent Christmas night 2008 at Ft Hamilton. Accomodations were great. Left my vehicle parked on post. Pleasant 5 block walk to subway and a 30 minute ride to Times Square. All day rail pass was around $7. Looking forward to doing it again.

Richard,

How far in advance are the reservations? For how long? Do you make the reservations via phone or email or....? Did your Category matter (i.e. AD vs retired)?
