Sandi and I and our newbies are at the Cabanas for one night. Nice room... no bath. You have to go outside and down the walkway. A plus might be that we are almost on the beach. Sandi does'n like the idea of no bath in the room. That's OK, we have a reservation at the TLF (starting rtomorrow) til the 1st.

Pinkies: Brings back great memories. In about 1961 I was stationed at MCAS Kaneohe Bay. Pinkies was a new restaurant opened in the-then Pali Palms Hotel (now an office building). The hotel was out what is now the back gate where Kaneohe Bay Drive begins. In those days, if you PCSd into KBay, you most likely spent up to 60 days at the Palms while you searched for civilian housing. You could not immediately get on base housing. As a lot of us enlisted did, I bartended at the PP and, when Pinky Nolen, decided to put in a steak house, we all thought it great. Pinky went out of his way to hire Marines. My best friend, Jim DiBernardo was an amatuer (albeit great) cook and Pinky hired him immediately. We did two great years there. Jim later accepted a commission (as I did) and prior to the TET offensive in 1968, he took over the AFRS station in Hue, was captured and served five years as a POW in the Hanoi Hilton. He died about three weeks ago. On each trip to KBay I visit Pinkies. Pinky Nolen is also dead, more's the pity.

There is a great restaurant just out the back gate on the left. I think the name was Pinkies? Food and service was super and everyone was very friendly.

If you don't mind staying in a single room, it is only $39. It is nice and the price is right.

Beach cabanas are booked through February.
The Q's won't take reservations until 2 weeks before you want something.

Below are the Q's numbers:

Work: 808-257-2409

The "Billeting" link on John D's site does not have any information about the Q's that William mentioned. Does anyone have the contact numbers (and maybe the location on base; &/or anything on line about the accommodations) to add to John D's site?

According to their link:

"Active military, retired military, reservists, and
DOD personnel are eligible to rent any of these units."

"Retired military, reservists and DOD employees have 30 days in advance to make a reservation. "

Aloha Leland,
The clerk was ready to sign us, wife and me, up for the following night. No mention of "official". I had shown my ID card to get keys to look at various rooms and had said we were on vacation. The old ones have AC. The newly renovated ones do not have the AC hooked up yet.
We live on Kauai w/o AC so the new ones, w/ fans and the "trades", would have been just fine.

I talked to them yesterday, they would not book anything around the dates of the BFB, will only do 2 week out. Also said it could get canceled due to flight crews.

http://benefits.military.com/misc/installations/Base_Content.jsp?id=2155

but I seem to recall some retiree couples staying there. Has anybody done it?

Ken,

Just stayed there 1 & 2 Jan at the Lodge.
$108 per night w/ a continental b'kst each AM. The Lodge is right inside the main gate and a short walk to a MCX. Only one room w/ two queen sized beds, micro, mini fridge and pvt bath.
There are Qs for $74 per night. The Lodge had not told us about the Qs and we found them up by the O'club. Got to looka at them - very nice w/ the typical two room suite & pvt bath. Bkfst only during the week.
The pain of a move outweighed the $34 saving.
