Actually, or both, "corporal E-4" or "Sergeant first class E-7", something like that. |

I don't think they have to puff up their chest. When talking on the phone and asked their rank by a civilian receptionist at a billeting office of a different service, I just think it makes sense to use the pay grade. I guess any of the flavors of general or admiral would be clear, but for anything else - just keep it simple. |

I'm siding with Jack here. I absolutely cannot imagine a Marine corporal puffing up his/her chest and saying he/she was an E-4. |

Speaking of semantics, it kind of works both ways. As a Marine Corps 0-3 I normally say Captain when asked for my rank. You would be surprised at what happens if this is a Navy base or Navy aircraft :-) Coming out of Rota last Fall my boarding pass clearly showed my O-3 status and we were duly seated towards the rear of the aircraft. Yet, on landing an announcement was made for Captain and Mrs. Paxton to identify themselves and come forward so we could be among the first off the aircraft. |

Hi Charlie. I always just say "E-8" when asked my rank. Cuts across the service divides. Perhaps the AF people misunderstand - they have Master Sergeant (E7), Senior Master Sergeant (E8), and Chief Master Sergeant (E9) and maybe misunderstood "master chief". |

Hi Leland yes the Navy ranks are Chief (E7), Senior Chief (E8, one star on anchor collar/cap devices) and Master Chief (E9, two stars on anchor collar/cap devices). Sometimes E8s are referred to as Senile Chiefs, and E9s as Enlisted Admirals (LOL) |

Charlie, are you talking Navy ranks here with reference to an Air Force base? I am confused. Is that E-9? |

Barry Knowledge question. Does Protocol control all the CM/MC (Master Chief) suites? I have tried to go through them at several bases, only to be told no suites, finding out later that there were. Long time no see maybe March or May this year. Charlie |

Can you say samantics?? The USAF has a senior NCO rank "Chief Master Sergeant" commonly called a Chief. The US Navy and Coast Guard have 3 ranks that use the title Chief. The other services have a warrant officer rank called Chief Warrant Officer...sometimes called a "Chief". Lots of folks from one branch of the military use the wrong term or don't understand the terms/ranks/acranyms of other branches (let alone how to spell them....). We once had an Army Chief Warrant Officer call Protocol and ask for a Chief Suite (meaning Chief Master Sergeant). They gave it to him over the phone. When he checked in, I noticed he wasn't a CMSgt, but a Chief Warrant Officer. I told him he could stay one night, not the 5 he had requested. He was a little miffed, but I reported the situation to Protocol and they backed me up (false representation). Of course the topper to this story, the Master Card he paid with wouldn't accept the charge. Protocol spent a week tracking him down and getting another credit card to pay for the room (and ended up black-listing him for DV suites!!!) |

Uncle Bud here, I called direct to Pearl Harbor billeting office at Arizona Hall and was able to get reservations at the CPO Building. This was after using the 1-877 Navy Bed number and they said there were no rooms available. Try the Bachelor Housing office at (808) 473-1203 / 5995 or the Pearl Harbor Reservations office at (808) 428-2603 /2604 or Arizona Hall (808) 421-6113 This is the number I called. If Ruby answers tell her that Uncle Bud says Hi. I did cancel our reservations as we are going to be staying downtown at the Milea Skycourt for around $60 a night. try www.discounthotelshawaii.com and tell them Uncle Bud sent you. |

I don't know of Chiefs quarters at Peal Harbor but they do have Chiefs quarters at Hickam which are normally for E-9s. Give them a call for reservations. Happy Travels. |

I think I am eating crow. I've tasted worse. Someone mentioned staying in Chiefs quarters at Pearl Harbor. I have searched and not been able to find the post/thread. Can someone please help me with information regarding this facility - location, reservation point, etc. All help will be appreciated. P.S. I'm trying to impress my bride with how useful I am. Thank you. |
