JEB, the peninsula is the Palos verdes and we like to drive out there for the views and some good walking trails along the bluffs above the ocean--with incredible views near the lighthouse area. The Wayfarer's Chapel above the road is so beautiful, all glass. Not a far drive from San Pedro. |

We cruised out of LA last year and stayed there in a TLF for a week when we returned. I got the TLF since my brother and his wife were with us and although he served in the military, he didn't hang around long enough to get "The Card." We actually had a 3 bedroom although we only needed two. Ours was a little dated but they were refurbishing them...on the inside. They are on the National Historical Record and it was explained to me that only the inside could be changed. I think the outside must stay close to the way it always was. They were taking the buildings down 1 at a time to refurbish them, so it may take a while to finish them all.
I was able to make reservations a month or so out. Also for anyone staying there, we normally went in and out in the same direction, just getting to the freeways the quickest. One day we turned in the other direction and drove around what I supposed was a peninsula and found the most beautiful scenery of the entire trip. You are driving high above the ocean with a fantastic view out over the ocean. We also found several places to eat nearby without driving to far. One was a Mexican place that we ate at a couple of times, good food and the price was right.
It's a little far from most of the attractions around LA but we could be anywhere we wanted to be usually in 30 minutes or so. We stopped by the LAAFB and got highly discounted tickets to some of the theme parks in LA.
And one highlight for me...As a kid in grammar school I studied about the Lebrea Tar Pits. I finally got to see them. The history of that place makes it worth visiting. I had no idea it was located basically in downtown LA. |

We have family in the area so we find it convenient to stay there but sometimes during the year, they make you wait till 3 days ahead of time to make your reservation. Other times, they will make it a month in advance. You just need to ask them about suites, and TLF. If you don't, they will just give you a room. If you are traveling w/o kids and are an officer, they have a special quiet bldg. Nice. They also have DV cottages thru protocol but we are not eligible for that and they do not bend the rules at all. They have computers to use in the lobby. No commissary on base, just a teeny shopette...but trader Joe's is nearby and I love the 99 cent only store nearby too. |

Hi Steve,
No beach access that I know of. It is a comfortable place to stay but not a lot of amenities.
It is typical military lodging that I have enjoyed because it is close to Long Beach, cruses, etc. I also have a son in the area. The location is not ideal unless you want those amenities. It works really well for me!!!
If you are looking for a place to stay because you want to a play a golf course for $160 per round (special), this may not be your place. It depends on your priorities. I have golfed and have friends that still play Pebble Beach.

Interesting.
Tell us more about a suite or TLF. I was there in May of 09 and heard or saw nothing about that.
Maybe I was to early.
It is a good location depending on what you are doing in L.A but more importantly where. I have always enjoyed staying there. |

Ft McArthur is also one of the two (that I know of) Air Force facilities that are called "Fort", (they took it over from the Army) the other is a recreation facility in AZ called Fort Tuthill - just a little trivia. |

we often stay there and for a few bucks more, get a suite or TLF, some of which are remodeled and look real new. Last time we were there (summer 09) there was no wireless yet but they had said "soon" so maybe it is happening now. Nice quiet base, a bit far from some things but that is ok with us |

John D, Twelve hours of driving had fuzzed the grey matter.
I did finally realize that the router in our room would facilitate access for a number of rooms depending on its range.
To add to the original post, there was an ironing board and iron and a TV and DVD player and a hair dryer.
The building and rooms are a little dated, but as mentioned before, extremely acceptable.
Our friends aren't deep into computers so they didn't bring one. I wouldn't be without my little Acer "netbook" though |

Phil,
Why would your friends need a router to determine if there was wireless available from their room? Couldn't they just use their computer (assuming they had one) to see if they could access a wireless connection? |

We are here for one night on the way to Travis.
Ft. McArthur is located in San Pedro, Ca. about 20 miles south of LA International. Their physical address is 2400 S. Pacific Ave., San Pedro, Ca. That address, in my TomTom, directed us to us within a block of the front gate.

It was nice and clean and fresh smelling.
If you're in the area, it is well worth a small diversion.
The room costs $39.00.
It has a small kitchenette w/ refer, microwave, two burner electric stove, toaster, can opener, pots, pans, and dishes. Standard size bed and a writing table and chair.
It also had free WiFi Internet. I'm not sure if all rooms have the wireless because some friends in another room had no router. |
