It is about money but if you have vacancies and lose people it may not be practical. I certainly don't have a "cash flow" of billeting. I also have not lost the perspective of spending millions of dollars on various projects, planes, equipment, funding "sand box" wars, etc. The military seems to have lost some perspective of "people" (including people who use billeting)in the money game. For me, I will use what is more economical and convenient. That maybe off base lodging or facilities. Thanks for the comments--I alway appreciate your comments and perspective. They turned their billeting over to MWR, who use it to make a profit that they, in turn, use to fund their MWR projects. They maximize their return by contracting out the construction and operation of the facilities to private hotel chains (currently IHG, I think) who base the fees they charge on what local hotels charge. The Army is doing the same thing with housing. Having neglected to properly fund housing for decades they are now so far into the hole in terms of maintenance (remember that youtube video of Ft. Campbell barracks with overflowing toilets, etc?) that the only way to remedy the problem is to sell their soldiers to the highest bidder. They then turn around and put out press releases patting themselves on the back for finally putting up decent housing. Army housing lost their moral compass a long time ago. Sorry for the rant. Some General or someone of slightly lesser rank may have had an idea and is trying to "make rank". Logic or economics does not entry in. Use whatever is the most best for you based on cost and convenience. If the vacancy rate is high, things will change but it may be some time.   Larry W. Sill's rates on our last trip back to TX/OK and found it to be way cheaper to stay off base. Try the MWR Folks at Pearl Harbor for rooms downtown. We are 1.5 blocks from Hale Koa, $77/night, nice clean room, free WIFI, coffee in room etc., big screen TV. However no beautiful views just a nice reasonable room. Read also that the system change will include taxing the accommodation as has happened at AAFES service stations where Firestone has has become the concessionaire. We called tripler lodging about a room, some one had told us the cost was $150.00 per night. I could not believe it because in Jan 2009 we had stayed there for $62.50 per night. But sorry to say when we called that was the price. Thank goodness we found another place
