We stayed at the Coast Guard Temporary Lodging in Novato, last May. It is at the old Hamilton AFB about 15 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge in Novato, CA. The units are old but very nicely maintained and reasonable. To visit San Francisco we just caught the ferry out of Larkspur (about 5 miles south of Novato) and it drops you right at the Embarcadero. For trips to the wine country, you only need go north for 30 minutes. Here is a link to the Coast Guard MWR page:

Garland,

As Dakota asked: What are you looking for?

Lodging that's clean safe, inexpensive, convenient (to where)?

In '08 I stayed in the Fisherman's Wharf HI (International Hostel, 240 Fort Mason
San Francisco CA 94123, Tel: 1-415-771 7277

It satisfied all of the above criteria and was a short walk from Fisherman's Wharf. I stayed in a dorm room, but they do have separate rooms w/ 2 beds (if you are a traveling duo) and wish privacy. Bed per night $28, yes $28 (brkfst incl).

There are other IH hostels in the SF area.

http://www.hiusa.org/

Personally, I frequent the IH to augment the AF & Havy Gateway Inns. Just in CA: Santa Barbara, Monterey, Santa Cruz & Fisherman's Wharf. I've also visited (G-2ed) Pescadero, San Luis Obispo, Montara, Santa Monica, Sacramento & Sausalito.

Besides in CA, I've also stayed at HI's in NY, MD, VA, Germany & Luxembourg.

Aloha, My son and I stayed at Navato Coast Guard lodging June 2009. Older quarters but reasonable and clean. Checked in late pm and they had the keys waiting. Recommended.

Hi Garland,

Lets get back to the basic question.

Alameda, Novato(old Hamilton) and Petaluma are miles apart. I have seen all of them but I only stayed at Alameda and that was many years ago. I think that I am fairly current in facilities. I did a drive through of Petaluma in Nov. I did a drive through of Novato about 18 months ago but did not stay there.

What are you looking for?

My info confirms FHYL's info as well as Dino's.

My info also indicates lodging facilities at the old Moffett Field now called Moffett Federal Airfield/NASA Ames Research Center which is south of S.F. You also have the Marine Memorial facility near Union Square in the City.

Do you have a specific requirement or location?

Traffic, bridge fees, commuter traffic, etc are all considerations.

If you are just going to visit S.F. go for locations in the City. If you are in the City consider parking as that is usually in the $25-30 per night range but some motel/hotels include it. If you are considering the general area, branch out in you search.

William,

I am not sure that it totally correct. I live in the general area but have not utilized Novato or Petaluma. Most of my info is certainly from other people.

Jim H., you might add something here as I know that you looked at Novato and Petaluma several months ago??

One of my buddies did stay the night at Petaluma Coast Guard Center several months ago. My memory indicates about 5-10 units near the club. He raved about the seafood buffet on Friday noon and had fun at the club.

He also investigated Novato. My info indicates some units with little support facilities. I drove through there a couple of years ago and seem to remember a very limited food facility like a "quick stop".

If the situation is correct, either may be better that a motel near S.F. although with this economy, there are selected motels near the wharf available in the $100 price range.

I do believe that there is no lodging available at Alameda.

Happy Trails!!!

Oops, I stand corrected on the transient lodging, looks like old BOQ's. We often stopped at Hamilton for shopping when stationed at the Presidio of SF 89-92. Everything used to be run by the Navy then, but Army and Navy in SF had use of housing. I flew over Hamilton last year and was amazed to see that they had totally removed all the old runways and taxiways and turned the area back into wetlands.

Coast Guard Island, Alameda, and the old air base Hamilton Field in Novato are two different locations in the SF bay area. I've heard that the Coast Guard station at Petaluma may use some of the old housing at Hamilton, but neither location has transitent lodging. Don't expect to find any support stuff like shopping at Hamilton as the Navy closed everything up in 93-94 when they pulled out of the bay area.

Have not stayed there but the Novato location is at the former Hamilton Field AFB, off of US 101, north of San Francisco. I don't believe the Alameda location has lodging.
