Suggestion, if and when customer service is lacking and local management doesn't handle it to well, fire a letter off to the main office describing the poor service and provide a CC to the offending manager. The business environment may be tough, but you're the reason for their existance and success.

And for your credit card charge, call the credit card company and advise them that the specific charge is "in dispute" and you will not pay the bill. They (the credit card company) should put that charge "on hold" and (1.) you should not incur a late fee for that charge nor (2.) should it affect your credit or credit scores.

We, too, have had problems with cancellations at Ford Island. A year or so ago we had made reservations but then had to cancel, well within the cancellation period. I called and was given a cancellation number. Several weeks later a charge appeared on our credit card from the Navy Lodge.
When I called to ask about it I was told by a very aggressive and somewhat nasty employee that they had no record of our cancellation and that the cxl number I had given her was bogus. Need less to say, I was not happy with the attitude nor the "service". I finally insisted I would not pay for a room that had been legitimately cxled and for which they had given me a cxl number to prove it.
Long story short, a few days later we got a call from Ford Island stating they had indeed found the records of our cancellation, but with no apologies for their error. So much for customer service.
At any rate, we have stayed there many times and always enjoy it; I would however caution others to keep good records when dealing with them, and to not give up in when you know you're in the right. At least in our case perserverance paid off.

I asked when I made the reservations, and they would only do 30 days out for retired, if we had to cancel would there be a problem. I was told if I canceled with more than 24 hours notice for the first day it would be charged, less than that, you pay for the night. We check out one day early and it was not a problem. I think they stay full with so many active duty folks, they have to know if you are going to use the room. We meet two different families one is there for 6 months till a base house opens the other 2 months. In the evening we would see a few groups of children in the court yard area all sitting around visiting, I would hate to have lived in there for 2 months with children while my husband was active duty.

I had reservations there a couple of years ago and circumstances required me to cancel. I called and canceled there as well as at KMC on Hawaii. I was charged for a no-show at Navy Lodge but not at KMC. I was notified by letter and I responded to the letter with a letter of my own to the manager. Apparently, it went into the circular file and I chalked it all up to the fact that I had failed to get the lady's name that I canceled with and was not given a cancellation number. I guess I had been too long retired to remember to get a name.

Phyllis, thanks for your report. I definitely would like to stay on Ford Island for historical reasons as well.

I believe they accept reservations 60 days out when calling direct.

While in Hawaii, we stayed at the Navy Lodge. This was an excellent place. I know it is more $$ than CBQ,($94.) but we felt well worth it. Our room was large two queen beds, small round table & 2 chairs, and one other small chair. The kitchen, had 2 burner flat top stove, ref. dishes and silverware for 4. Right now they have a breakfast to go bag you pick up in the lobby. It had a sweet roll, dole fruit cup and bottle water. They did tell me they are making a breakfast room and will be putting the regular continental breakfast. There are two places on this site to eat, but not for dinner. On the down side you do need a car, but no charge for parking. It is 1 1/2 mile walk to Kam HGY to get the bus into town. The NEX bus stopps twice a day and you can go to the PX. The first stop is 8:30, second around 11:30. They only come back to the lodge at 11:30, so if you take the late bus you are on your own. The lobby area is great for meeting friends and enjoy a visit, which we did. The pool area is lovely with chair in both the sunshine and shade. We would stay here again for sure. Also have a small PX with food items and suntan products and movie rental in lobby
