Today is sunny and warm at K-Bay-we are headed to the Seabreeze this afternoon, so hopefully the sun will shine on us at Hickam. As we drove from KB to Hickam yesterday, rainy at KB, sunny at Hickam. We saw 3 rainbows on the way- I tried to grab the pot of gold, but Jess was driving to fast.
There is a flight to Richmond tonite-7 seats-need to see the new grandson-so I have my fingers and toes crossed!!!!!

Jim or I neither one remember the cable, do remember all the little litght colored lines all over the building. We figured that was places that have been filled in or marked for sometype of repair work. If the would just put a bit bigger bed in after they finish the work, the double is just not good for two folks use to the king.

Elaine,
Is it still raining on the Kaneohe side of the H3 tunnel and sunny on the Honolulu side?

That was so strange when we were there. You would leave a deluge going into the tunnel from Kaneohe and come out into sunshine... like magic.

Thank you, Phil! I was wondering.

Jesse,
That cable is to give the workers something to attach to while they will be remodeling on the outside of the building.

10:30pm Fla time-sitting in the lounge at 5 Palms. The day has been cool and misty. No need for the nonexistant ac and we didn't need the fan. I glanced out our 2nd floor room and a steel cable is wrapped around the building. Holding us up?
The clerk told us remodeling is in the works and the building can not be demolished. I can see repairs that have been made since we were here in 07. All in all, I like the ambiance of this place formally called the transient barracks, now the 5 Palms.

Larry your right, the view is wonderful. The food in our ref. was not something I could name, not sure what it was or long it had been there. If you get one of the rooms that has been redone it might be much nicer.

"when we check in there was food in the ref."

Phyllis just jogged my memory.....when I checked in at the 5 Palms there was food in my refrigerator, too. But I'm not complaining! It was a big zip-lock bag containing a pound or more of the very best trail mix (raisens, dates, almonds, chocolate, etc.) I've ever had. I ate on that all the way to Yokota!

Not a bad price for the O'Club Mongolian BBQ Rebecca had, since it included drink & dessert. I may try it next time. Gotta be better than the undercooked beef with broccoli I had at the K-Bay food court's Chinese food place.

But getting back to the 5 Palms: I think we can all agree the view from up there is magnificant, even if the rooms aren't.

Phil, we were in Room 217.

Larry, we had Mongolian BBQ at the O-Club on Wednesday night. It was very good, and ran about $12 per person. That included your drink (iced tea, coffee, etc), and your dessert (ice cream).

Phil, as you can see the grading of quarters vary greatly with spats. I've always felt lucky to get a room at K-Bay and I too enjoy their great breakfast spread. The corner rooms have a great cross-breeze and though I love a/c I don't need it in a corner room. Their little gym in the building is a real plus also.

Larry, I think the rooms at K-Bay are better than sleeping on the beach, but I wouldn't enjoy staying there for more than a night. Jim and I are just used to a king size bed, so that small bed for more nights isn't all that great for us. Also when we check in there was food in the ref., the place had dust an inch thick and the shower door wouldn't close all the way. Now on the plus side, they have nice little travel extras in your room, incase you had forgot toothpaste, shaving cream ect. The kitchen Phil spoke of was also a nice plus, we didn't use it, but if I had to stay there for very long I think I would have. We had dinner at the golf course, which wasn't to far from there.

I've thoroughly enjoyed it both times I've stayed there. My only complaint is the long distance to eating establishments....but then again I've been on foot both times. I've heard from other guests that the O'Club next door is rather expensive.

Phil, our crew didn't stay at 5 Palms. They told us they are always put up in the Outrigger hotel down in Honolulu. The goverment has a contrat with several different private hotel chains that they stay in depending on where they are.
I was shocked at 5 Palms! It has to be the worse BOQ we have ever stayed in. Once we got up there Friday, we said boy we should of just got up early and driven up from Ford Island. I think $40 a night is about $30 to much for the old rooms. We met a couple on the flight out who were staying there for 3 nights. They had asked for a regular room, when they check in they were put on a suite. They figured they were paying $40 a night, because that was what they asked for. Wrong when they check out they were told no you pay the $76 a night. There door would not even lock. This would be a last resort place for in any more trips to the area.

Becky,
We were on the driveway side of the building (room 229) and could only get a breeze when the door was open.

Where was your room? I'll try to get there next time.

We stayed at the BOQ for a couple of nights last week. When we first checked in, I too, was taken aback by the somewhat rundown appearance of the facility.

However, it became one of my favorite military lodging facilities on Oahu. I actually enjoyed the lack of air conditioning. Sleeping at night to the feel of the cooling tradewinds was heavenly. Everything was very convenient; ATM, exchange, post office, etc. I also liked the close proximity to Bellows, which is my favorite beach for suntanning.

I enjoyed eating breakfast every morning with the various other guests.

Go in the gate, from H3 highway, to the second light. The first light is where the Marine Mart (Shoppette) is located.

Turn left at the second light and go to the airplane (can't miss it). Turn right just before the airplane and go to the stop sign at the top of the hill.

The "O" club is across the street from the stop sign... the 5 Palms is the 3 story building just to the left. Drive straight through the stop (after stopping of course) between the club and lodging to the lodging's circular drive way.

Don't go to the right of the club and down the hill.

We stayed at 2 different lodgings on MCAS Kaneohe during the 2010 BFB.

The first night we arrived too early to make our reservations at the BOQ, so we stayed in the "Cabanas". We were told that there is always a vacancy at the "Cabanas".

They appear, on the outside, to be reconditioned barracks. Considering that they have NO "in room" bath/toilet (just a sink), this may sound bad but, they are actually very nice. In the room were two double beds, a table w/two chairs, a refrigerator, a microwave, a large wall mounted LCD TV and a wall mounted A/C unit. You have to go outside and down the walk to the end of the building to the bath. WiFi is also available in the room.

The next morning, we had our coffee while walking along the beach and a late microwave prepared breakfast at the picnic tables right next to the beach.

Had it not been for the walk to the bath (old folks need to go frequently) we would have changed our reservation and spent our time there.

For more info go to:
http://www.mccshawaii.com/cabanas.htm

The picture looks exactly like our room did.
The Cabanas are part of MWR.

The second through the eighth nights, we spent in the BOQ (5 Palms). It is a very old, dated and run down building. It is where the flight crews stay and I was ashamed that they had to stay in such conditions. Thankfully, I understand that they will soon start renovations.

The rooms are set up so that two rooms share a bath. If reservations are not full, they will block the "other" room and allow you to have a private bath.

There is no maid service or breakfast on the weekends.

During the week, there is a right nice breakfast of cereals, pastries, fruit, jams, bagels, cream cheese, juice, milk and coffee available in the lobby next to the snack room.

The snack room holds the vending machines, a regular toaster, a rotary bed toaster and a microwave. The coffee machines are there, as well, but no coffee on the weekends (make sure that you have enough "in room" coffee for the weekends).

There is no WiFi in the rooms, but is available in the lounge.

Outside (under cover) is a full kitchen for "first come" use. It has a stove, utensils, a "huge" gas BBQ grill, sink, table and chairs.

We baked potatoes in the microwave in the snack room and cooked steaks and beans on the grill one night.

There is no A/C in the rooms. So I hope that, if after the renovations it remains so, they put vents in over the door so that a breeze could flow through the room. While in the room, during the day, we needed to prop the door open to get a breeze.
