I highly rec'd the Whaler in Kaanapali (its a condo). A very nice walkway that leads from the Hyatt all the way up to Black Rock and beyond. Lots of places to eat, shopping, etc. If you look up the Maui Revealed Book on-line you can see an aerial shot of each hotel you are thinking of staying at and a nice review (pro and con) of each.

About 5 years ago we shared a very nice condo in Lahaina near the airport. It was at the Mahina Surf. They have a website. Not on the beach but a beautiful pool and right on the ocean. Very reasonable rates and convenient. Nice and quiet. They had an arrangement with a concierge that gave us great discounts on sightseeing, luau, even at the grocery store. Loved Maui!

We stayed at the Aston Maui Lu in Kihei for two weeks over Thanksgiving 2009. We paid $95/night for a large room with lanie and refrigerator. We arranged the rental through the Hickam ITT office once we were in Hawaii. The ITT staff, particularly Jonathon, was very helpful and efficient. The Maui Lu is rather old but very clean, a good value and in a quiet area. Also, it is well located for touring the island. We had originally reserved the Maui Lu for only one week and planned to rent an AFVC condo for the second week. But, before we rented the condo we drove up to Lahaina to look at it. The area was so congested that, although the condo would have been cheaper and newer, we decided to extend our stay at the Maui Lu. Not saying that Lahaina isn't nice, just more congested than we wanted for our vacation.

Several years ago, we stayed at this condo complex. It's right on the beach, and a short distance from Lahaina, and the resorts at Kaanapali.

It's also reasonably convenient from the airport at Kahului.
